House Speaker Advice Needed (see diagram)

Hi there,

I am hoping somebody on this incredible board can help me out. My wife and I just bought a house and would like to

1) Have a room to watch TV that has surround sound
2) Be able to hear music throughout the entire house (background music)

Basically, we have two very nice B&W speakers (DM605 S2), which we use for listening to music right now. In addition, we have a laptop with 4 Logitech speakers in a separate room. The thought is to have sound throughout the entire house (kind of like a background noise) that can be played from the computer (or laptop on WIFI) or directly from the receiver in the living room where the B&W speakers are. Initially we thought about putting ceiling speakers in most rooms but that would be rather expensive and we have a California basement, hence the ability to get under the wooden floor and drill a hole for speakers and cables.

We were hoping that some of you might have good ideas as to what kind of system to install. Ideally, we would like the living room to have decent speakers to go with the B&Ws so we can enjoy movies and CDs if desired. The rest of the house only has to produce "decent" output at mostly lower volumes. The diagram shows my initial thought of getting affordable floor speakers (possibly small ones on little stands) for each room (see green circles), run wires through the crawlspace and somehow connect all wires at the receiver or possibly additional amp (if needed). I was hoping that we could somehow control the music from both, the receiver as well as the Office / Bedroom #2.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much!

Stefan

Diagram is missing, and the budget is missing.

I couldn't attach the diagram or post a link since I am a new user and don't have at least 5 ratings. Budget definitely on the lower end, around $1,000 - 2,000.

Honestly $1-2,000 seems a little low for whole-home audio.

Sonos

Go to Sonos.com. I suggest a Play3 or Play5 in the rooms that you would like music in with the $49 bridge. Good sound, much cheaper than wiring for in ceiling. Sonos accesses entire itunes library and streams everything from radio to MOG (my fav) to Pandora, etc. Controlled from iPad or phone, droid phones, laptops. We love it.

Room diagram for speaker setup

Thank you all for your great ideas. I finally got around to upload a diagram of the desired speaker setup. You can access it here and I would appreciate any thoughts that could further help us the option that provides the best cost / benefit ratio.
