sorry this is a bit long--title is wrong regarding model number
I just picked up a couple older things Adcom's gfa-545 and gfp-555. I picked them up at a garage sale while they were playing through some older AR speakers. They sounded great as far as there was no distortion, and they weren't running excessively hot as far as my hand could tell--just a nice warmth.
I brought them home and opened up the amp to take a look at the boards and the caps. Didn't see anything royally amiss but did notice that one of the led's that indicate harmonic distortion was missing--I replaced it with a small led and slipped it in the hole of the front panel.
I hooked up everything in the garage on my workbench and played a cd through the preamp to the amp, hooked up some old OHM speakers and Eric Clapton was sounding fine.
ok, step two moving inside
I have a Marantz 6004 that has preamp outputs so I connected the front speaker preamp outputs to the Adcom 545's left and right inputs. I am using PSB imagine T's as my front speakers.
When viewing tv (Verizon cable box w/pvr) and I skip forward or backward as in skipping a commercial, there is a small pop through the speakers (never was there before) If you select a different source on the Marantz, basically do anything with a remote to change language settings on a dvd while playing on the ps3, there is a small pop (all of these pops are the same volume whether the volume is high or low on the receiver) EDIT--the pop sounds like a needle being lowered onto an album in the groove before the song starts.
Have heard about the hazards about cap's drying out and causing serious issues in older amps, but this doesn't seem to fit into that situation.
any ideas about whether or not this "popping" (its fairly low in volume, definitely not a large annoying pop) is something I need to be concerned with? The marantz manual doesn't say anything about setting anything up different in order to use the preamp outputs--looks like just plug and go.
well I hope I explained this alright. Have only had the amp for two days so I only know about what I read in the online manual that thank goodness was available on Adcom's website.
the popping is just irritating enough to consider relegating the amp to a simple two channel system out in the garage. I really thought it might be a good idea to run the front channel in the family room. that would be my preference as long as I'm not in danger of frying my PSB's--yikes
thank you in advance for any ideas you might have,
Daniel
