First, I am a quadriplegic who loves old blues and other stuff you don't hear on mass market radio. Have not even listened to radio in 7-8 years except when forced to by my buddy who plays it 24/7 in is shop while working on his race car.
I have been laid up in bed the last 5 years and listen to music I find on net. Well things are getting better and I'm up 12 hours a day.
I bought a Carver HR-752 and AR - 510's about 20+ years ago. A few years back the speakers needed new foam surround. Not having the physical or financial ability to do it myself I just had someone put the system in a closet.
Now I like to listen to music on my computers with a decent pair of speakers. Logitech Z2300 on an old HP DC7100 with SB Audigy or an old Toshiba A105 laptop with Logitech Z4's.
So, now I went and bought a 46" Sceptre TV and want to add better sound. I know easiest and cheapest way is to just add a pair off my computer speakers. But I have been giving thought to adding the Carver HR752. I don't really want a full 5.1 surround system. A 2.1 is all I can afford at the moment. Plus I want to use my HP DC7100 to play movies via VGA and great old video footage of some super performances by (as my niece say's) "DEAD" people. Yes I would have to fix the AR speakers or find another pair and I see good speakers all the time on CraigsList.
So, should I just hook up the Z2300's, the CARVER HR752 or niether - buy a good used home theater system? donnie aka gimpy don

If your TV has line level audio outputs (some do not), you can use your old Carver receiver. Assuming that the fidelity of those outputs is okay, it should sound just as good with your Carver as with a new receiver for 2 channel sound. However, the bass management would likely be better with a receiver that has at least Dolby Digital, so a 2.1 system might be better with a surround receiver, though a subwoofer with speaker level inputs can work with what you have, and should be okay.

Of course, you will want to make sure that the Carver still works okay before you count on being able to use it. But it should be able to deal with most speakers quite well, so I would recommend using it if you can.

As for the speakers, I am not sure which ones you mean. Do you mean the AR TSW510 or some other model? Regardless, I have no idea what they are worth and consequently have no idea if it is worthwhile having them refoamed or not. If you particularly like them, then it may be worth it even if their market value is low. Given your situation, I cannot give you the advice I normally give people, to go out and audition as many speakers as they can stand to audition.

But before you plan anything, make sure the TV has line level audio outputs, or you will be doing something other than using that Carver (or computer speakers). Some only have an optical digital output for audio, and for dealing with that, you will want a receiver with at least Dolby Digital.

First off, nmake sure your new TV has analog audio outputs.

Check the manual, or at least post the make AND MODEL NUMBER so we can try to find information about on the web.

Yes, the tv has analog lines in and out. The AR is Acoustic Research TSW510. I actually purchased a set of replacement foam surrounds but they deteriated before I even opened the envelope they came in. My brother is good at fixing things so I got the parts but he got hooked on meth and if being a gimp is not bad enough already throw that in there for laughs. Good thing is he's off meth bad news is he's a very mean alcoholic so.......
He was going to hook the Z2300 into the tv today but he's half way lit so I don't let him touch my stuff when he's like that which is becoming an everyday thing.
Enough about that, back to men/women and thier audio toys. Reciever works so I'll look for used set of speakers or a used HTS that wan't break the bank. Plenty of used ones around. Could sell the Carver & AR's but they have some sentimental value of better days. thanks, donnie
