Home Theater System on the Move

Hello all,

I want to start setting up my first home theater system. I love all the great ideas and set ups that are in these forums. I really like the recommended system here.

The major issue is that I am in the military and can't call a place home for more than 2-3 years. So I want to build or gradually build up a system that is somewhat portable, not to big (yet), and eventually in 6 or so years, can be used in my permanent home theater.

Budget is 6k or so. and I just found the : Denon AVR-3312CI on sale for 550.00. I snagged it up after a bit of research, and decided to build my system around it. I also have an Xbox360, and a 48" Flatscreen.

I want to eventually swap out the LCD for a projector.

Should I just buy the towers and center channel, and worry about surround, subs, and projector when I get settled in one place?

Or should I just get it all and set it up / take it down everytime I have to move? :-(

Thoughts? Setup Ideas for portability?

Get what you want, just keep the boxes. I would say that smaller sealed subs and slim towers/bookshelves make for easier placement in a variety of rooms. The EMP speakers with a couple ES1010i would make for a great system.

I would probably go with decent bookshelves and a subwoofer - yes keep the boxes. Ascend Acoustics CMT-340SE are a bit large for bookshelves but still portable and you won't be heartbroken if the finish gets a nick during a move. With a pair of HTM-200 surrounds you're in under $1100 and and then add a good sub like a Rythmik FV12 for $550 for an FV15HP for $1300 - depending on the size of your room. That gives you excellent sound for between $1600 and $2500 depending on the size of the room.

Man I wish I were in your spot!!! Nice & fresh is a fun place to be haha!! Specially with what I know now.

Here is my recommendation:

Mains-Salk SongTowers $2000 Pair
Center-Salk SongCenter $800 Each
Surrounds-Emotiva XRM6.1 $314 Pair
Subwoofer-HSU VTF-15H $880
Projector- $2000 of choice

Enjoy!!! :D

A projector which is 3D capable will run $2,500 right now for one that is on the 'mid-level' side of things. Then a screen would be needed as well. Not sure whether that is in the cards right now or not.

I would NOT skip the subwoofer, but might skip the center channel and the surrounds. Lots of excellent towers and even some bookshelf speakers on the market.

I think I would be most temped to get some decent bookshelf speakers to later repurpose as surround speakers, and a good sealed subwoofer which will be able to be packed up. The smaller Epik or one of the other brands that have a tight enclosure should make you pretty happy for sound as you move around, then a jump to a more defined speaker when you lock into a place for the long term.

You won't have as much wiring to deal with everytime you move, and less to store and deal with in general.

Oh, and I picked up one of those Denons as well - that was a great deal!
