Home Theater Setup issues

Hello Everyone,

I have a Onkyo HT-S990THX 7.1 System. I have a Sony Bravia LCD. I have a PS3.

I already have the PS3 run through the HDMI to the TV, I purchased some Red, Yellow, White cables to run through the TV to the Onkyo receiver. I cant seem to get sound out of my Onkyo system. Ive tested all the speakers with the "test tone" and they are all good. When I have The "R,Y,W" cables hooked to the TV it gives me an option to use Video 1, but if I use that then I no longer have video through the PS3. I dont have cable for the TV yet, so watching regular TV isnt the issue. The HDMI cable from the PS3 provides all the sound and video to the TV. Im just trying to re-route the sound through the theater system and use the TV just for video. Im at a loss, after going through the instruction manual. Im hoping there are some geniuses here who might have an idea. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum, Gary!

We can troubleshoot your solution, but I'd like to offer an alternative approach first. With your gear, I would recommend that you connect the HDMI output from the PS3 to the HDMI input on the TV (exactly like you've done), but for audio, I would connect the optical digital audio output from the PS3 to one of the three optical digital audio inputs on your receiver. That will give you far better audio for anything playing on the PS3 than would running the analog audio from your TV.

Do you have an optical cable that you could use to try that out?

As Adam said, running standard rca cables from the tv to your onkyo is not the way to go. Since your receiver does not have hdmi, you cannot run the ideal way which is from the ps3 to your onkyo, to the tv. TVs cannot pass multi channel dolby digital audio to an external source. It will be downconverted to 2 channel. Hooking it up as adam stated with a toslink (optical) cable is the only other output option the ps3 has. That would be the 2nd best. They are about $10 at your local walmart or radio shack. Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD master can only be passed via HDMI which your onkyo doesn't support. You can get the "core" audio from these tracks which is 1.5mb/sec if memory serves me correct. Make sure you go into the settings on your ps3 and set video out to hdmi and audio out to optical. Then make sure you have the correct input assigned on the onkyo. You may be able to use the standard red/white/yellow cable supplied with the ps3 for audio but not 100 percent sure instead of optical. Same thing. Set hdmi for video output on ps3 and the r/w/y under the audio out settings. Hope this helps!

Echoing the advice given above - your TV will not pass audio as most all TVs only provide audio from their tuners to the audio output of the TV - or at best only analog audio sources. Do as Adam first suggested and run HDMI to your TV and digital audio to your receiver. You should be able to designate the audio be output via digital out on your PS3.
