Too bad. It's a good list. However, I'm surprised that not one Internet company (e.g. Salk, Aperion, etc.) made the list.

http://hometheaterreview.com/the-10-best-audiophile-speakers-list---2009/

The list:

Code:
Bowers and Wilkins 802d ($14,000 per pair)
Canton Reference 3.2 DC ($16,000 per pair)
Definitive Technology Mythos ST ($3,999 per pair)
MartinLogan Source ($1.995 per pair)
Meridian DSP8000 Digital Loudspeakers ($40,000 per pair)
Meyer Sound X-10 Studio Monitors ($30,000 pair and up)
Paradigm Atom V5 ($250 per pair)
PSB Alpha B Bookshelf Speakers ($249 per pair)
Revel Concerta F12 Floorstanding Speaker ($1,200 per pair)
Wilson Sasha WP ($26,900 per pair)
The good news is that I'm actually informed enough to have heard of every company on this list except Meyer Sound.

I might have to give the Sources a listen at Fry's one of these days.

I'd like it if they put a budget in there somewhere like best for under 4k, and then show what speakers were considered and why they didnt make the cut. like in the car mags they have 4 drivers give their impression of the car and their ranking that would be cool to.

There should have been categories based on price levels. We all know of some killer small companies that build amazing speakers, my favorite is ACI with their Sapphire XL and Emerald XL. Others will mention the Ascend Sierra 1. What about big companies that do things right like Harbeth, GamuT, etc. Finally, Home Theater magazine is focused on HT setups, and therefore should stick to listing HT speaker systems.

It seems like you need to qualify things a little bit if you're going to be comparing 802d's to Atom V5s. der... the closest they get is "a listed speaker needs to offer a unique value and/or value proposition." WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

Means nothing. The list is just some dude's opinion which he probably wrote up because he was bored.

Or because the brands he listened to are bringing in mad advertising $$$. You just cannot trust magazine opinions anymore.

Go to a show by one of the larger touring bands and look at the speakers if you want to see Meyer Sound- they'll usually have an M pressed into the perforated metal grills. They do speakers for huge PA systems, studios and are getting into more small-medium sized speakers. Great sound, too.

Oh and this site doesn't advertise either

Oh wait it does... does it mean it can't be trusted either?

I'm amazed that they chose the DefTech Mythos ST over even mentioning the BP7002, 7001 or 7000sc. Which to me trounce the Mythos ST and STS.

I don't see why people are stunned by $30 000 price tag on a pair of speakers. Why not be furious about a 60k German sedan?
I personally hate driving especially on crowded NY streets and love listening to the music, so given a choice I'd pick a Hyundai and a nice pair Orion's or build something exuberantly insane. :)
Besides you don't need to spend that much if you don't mind some elbow grease.

I don't understand why people get their panties in a bunch when their fanboy brand doesn't make the list. Oh well, deal with it, not the end of the world. I would love to listen to some Canton speakers one day myself.

That's where boards like this come in. Of course we're full of opinions as well. But at least you can get some back and forth versus "the magazine said this was best ..."

Well not only that but the list was ridiculous. 10 speakers only; where price seemed to be no object? Yeah lots of insight went into that write up. Didn't even bother listing the "dozens of other speakers" that weren't posted.

Might as well of listed the 10 best sandwiches he's ever eaten.

This list is really silly. It means nothing. There are hundreds of wonderful speakers out there. Like this guy actually took the time to listen to them all.

Having spent time at RMAF, CES, & CEDIA, talking and drinking beer with the writers (RMAF is the best for communicating IMHO), I would respectfully disagree. Nobody is getting rich writing audio reviews, in reality only the publisher of the biggest magazines and e-zines can make it as a career. The average writer gets between $100-500 an article (most are under $200, especially the e-zines with a few actually being volunteer). Except for those very few that are independently wealthy, they all have regular jobs. I'd bet the Admin for this site would agree whole-heartily.

What they are influenced by is the brands/models they've actually reviewed. No one writer can experience but a sample of everything that is available. Therefore, they pick the ones they've spent time with.
