i recently purchased a surround sound system from best buy to accompany gears of war 3 and some DTS movies i have. I bought this setup

Pioneer SP-PK51FS

Pioneer VSX-821-K

The speakers here are kinda big for my room and i was hoping there was something for less that has the same quality sound. This is for my bedroom which isnt that big its 12x14 i believe and really awkwardly shaped. Is this a good system in general? Is there anything with smaller speakers that could possibly deliver the same quality? My price range is about 800 maybe a bit more. This is just for my room so i don't want anything TOO fancy. Thanks for your help!

I have no direct experience with either your speakers or these, but this seems like a good option:

...the speakers are not going to be tremendous, but Hsu makes good stuff for the money. The sub will be a keeper, at least, and the speakers will be adequate if you're going to prioritize small size for a "not too fancy" bedroom system.

With a $900 budget for only the speakers (assuming 5 channels and a subwoofer), you can easily fill a 12x14 space with excellent sound. The problem becomes the space you're trying to fill.

First, is your budget of $900 for 5 speakers + subwoofer only? Do we need to worry about adding cable costs to that.

Second, what is your environment like? A simple MS Paint diagram would help a lot. Furniture, ceiling height, floor type (carpet or wood, hard wood or laminate). Do you share walls? Where is the door? IS there a door? Where is your current listening/viewing setup sitting? What's your viewing/listening distance from the front stage?

Third, do you have a preference for designs? Some people like the exotic looking wood cabinets, some people like piano black, some people like a hardwood grain look.

Zimbo is right, Hsu stuff is all good. They make good speakers and their subs aren't commodities. Most people could keep even the lowest Hsu sub for life.

EDIT: I quick thought made me think of this setup. Aperion Audio Intimus 4B speakers for front and rear sides, 1 Aperion Audio Intimus 4C center channel, and 1 Hsu Research STF2 (which I love for sounding like STFU since that's what you'll do when you hear how awesome that sub can be in a small room like yours). That should come out around your budget, and I know from experience it'll sound better than that Pioneer system. When it comes to speakers, bigger cabinets don't always equal better sound.

900 would be the budget for everything including the receiver not just speakers. Piano black would be fine but im open to anything. I have carpet and three doors. My viewing distance is pretty much like 7 feet away from the tv. Ill get you the exact measurements later! I dont really care about designs as long as the speakers arent huge towers like the ones i have now :)

Ok. Along that line of thinking, where would you situate bookshelf speakers if you get some? Will they be wall mounted? On actuated mounts or fixed angle mounts? There's just so many things that can go wrong when spec'ing out a good system for your needs. :D

Also, your receiver choice is fine but that significantly cuts into your speaker budget. I'd reckon if you keep the receiver and return the speakers, you've got $500-600 for speakers. In that range, I'd seek out some used good speakers rather than new mediocre speakers.

the bookshelf i would wall mount in the back corner of the room with the front 2 on the from wall. Kinda make a box since my room is square. The center one will go right under my tv stand. I hear about audyssey a lot of places and how amazing it is. I know this system has a mic calibration but is audyssey anything i would HAVE to have? Im not that great with audio stuff as you can tell !

The earlier recommendation of HSU speakers is dead on!!!

I have heard these a few times & each time i am blown away by their performance specially for the price!!

This is what i really think you should do. Get 2 of their bookshelf speakers & 1 of their subs. This will give you amazing sound in your small room. Dont be fooled into thinking you NEED to jump right into 5.1. Start off with a good 2.1 system which will give you 70% of the sound that 5.1 will. Then save up over time to get surrounds then save a little more for a center. Believe me!..performance per dollar HSU's speakers a great. Their subs are absolutely top notch.

What will end up happening if you get a cheap 5.1 is, you'll love it a first then like it for a bit then want more real quick. So if you plan this out right, you'll start off with really good & move to great in no time.

That is my honest belief of what you should do. But of course its your decision.
