Wife wants a new printer, we're leaning towards laser, B&W, fairly low usage(1-2 reams of paper per year). Two members of my coffee clutch use Brother, any other recommendations ?

I had an HP all in one and never used it enough for the freaking ink cartridges to work. Once I'd had enough of that POS, I asked a friend who ran a computer store and he recommended Brother because they use toner. I found a Brother HL-L2360DW at Beast Buy when it was on sale and these come with a starter cartridge. Well, that starter cartridge lasted for several years. I finally bought replacement cartridges and they were far less money than a single black HP ink cartridge and the full toner cartridge is supposed to be good for 10,000 pages.

I was tired of messing around with our inkjet when we wanted to print something so broke down and bought a color laser printer in April. No issues so far.

Watch out for the newest printer versions where some companies are requiring people to have a subscription.

This is more of a “not recommended” but I bought a Canon PIXMA TR160 about 6 months ago because I needed a portable printer for work. It is very compact and it does print, but that’s about it. It doesn’t scan, and the ink cartridges need to be replaced constantly if you are printing anything more than a tiny number of pages. The replacement cartridges are ridiculously expensive given the puny amount of ink in them.

I concluded that the primary design goal of this printer is to generate ink cartridge sales from suckers like me

If you print rarely, then avoid ink jets. They routinely go through cleaning cycles which uses some ink, and if left unattended for long periods can still have the jets get clogged up. We use an Epson multi-function but we print regularly which keeps an ink jet in good working order. Ink prices have gone up significantly in the last year though.

My mother and son print rarely, so I got them both a Brother B&W laser. These can sit for months without use and then fire up just fine. I always try and get multi-functions with scanning ability as it can be handy and is better than phone camera apps but multi-functions will be taller. If you need colour then research more carefully but for occasional use B&W should suffice.

If we're only talking about laser printers (which I think we are), I doubt you can wrong with the major brands. The top 3 brands have produced laser printers since the 80s and should have the engineering solid. Ink-jet is a waste of money if you're not printing daily and even then they have poor reliability.

For sure Laser, wife wants nothing to do with ink jet anymore. other than Brother I'm getting good feedback on Canon and HP

Brother laser like the HL-L2460DW gets my vote. Never needs maintenance other than to add paper and toner. Eventually it asked for a new drum, but even that was working perfectly up to that point. Still have the previous model too which works except for the WiFi, but printer part still cranks out pages without issue using a USB connection.
