would cutting the dense foam my sub came packed in to the right size and using it as an isolation base be effectively the same as using a gamma?? its about 2 inchs thick.

The Gramma has a few different things going on that you would be hard pressed to duplicate. However it can't hurt to try. Here's something that I made:

I got the Grammas from Phil (Speakerman 39) months ago.

Phil,

I've been somewhat hesitant to start changing things around because my EQ was set with the Rives Test CD 2. Since then I have hung up Paradigm Dawg's GIK 242 Elite sound panels. Now that I have a laptop to run REW with I want to learn how to use that and take some before and after type measurements before I start moving subs and speakers around. I've been up to other useless tasks too. Seems like the things that I'm interested in and don't know anything about could fill volumes. Besides all that I am pretty happy with how things sound out in the living room. That's the real reason that I'm not in a hurry to start changing things around.

Maybe tomorrow ...

well the two inch dense packaging foam i used seems to have stopped some boominess i was getting at a certain frequency, it would make the room buzz. the mid kick seems clearer too, i tested with and without a few times. i can hear a difference so im keeping for the time being.

Here is my home made one (using the sub packaging material). It definitely helped control the boom and floor shaking, but I still get enough floor and walls shaking during movies that it gets me grinning ear to ear. (cheap condo construction)

A Gamma is amazing and hard to truly duplicate.

However anything will help probably. Just use your brain(if you still have one of those mine went out a couple years ago)

Alex, I fully understand. Just wanted to make sure the Grammas was worth your investment. I can also relate to the lack of time thing. Here, I am currently dealing with so much myself. For one, I have been very sick and of course you know about my Mom's situation. Anyways, when you do learn how to use the REW be sure to let us all know. Perhaps, post some before and after curves. This could be very useful to other members here. Anyways, hope all is well otherwise my friend.

thats a cool center channel stand. did you cut 2 regular stands and bolt a piece of wood accross the top? I am thinking of doing something similar

The material that Auralex uses went through a vast amount of engineering, experimentation and testing/measurements. I talked with a guy that is a forum member here and worked at Auralex.

He cited to me about the different properties of materials that went into the final product, density, compliance. Stiff but not too stiff, soft but not too soft.

You can experiment with other material, but they came up with a recipe that works well, and they have in the field results with all the Pro Audio Products like the PlatFoam riser/absorption product, which is actually the same product they use for the gramma

Yup! They are chopped Axiom FMS QS stands that I already had.

When I moved to my current place, I no longer needed them since I could wall mount the sides, but I needed a center stand. I did not like anything in the market and absolutely none met my requirements.

So I chopped the stands to the correct height and put a plank across them. Plank (from scraps pile) and spray paint together cost $10 at Home Depot. DIY ROCKS!
