I want to put together a home audio system using rack mount equipment.

1. pre-amp with inputs
2. Power Amp
3. Graphic Equalizer

where can I find equipment? I am an audophile from way back years ago
and now I have the money to put together a real system.

I will feed the system audio from my computer. I have an audio card
installed to handle most all formats(2.1, 5.1 , etc).

I still have my heathkit amp that works but I want all new equipment.

A decent receiver with preouts like an Onkyo TX-NR708 will make a fine preamp and it has an optical connection for most sound cards. Emotiva makes very good amps. Finally graphic equalizers are so 1970s. The Audyssey MultiEQ system built in to the receiver will EQ the room automatically after you run the setup.

What I haven't seen is what you plan to run for speakers. Chose the speakers before the amp.

I have an EQ, but I just use it for show along with the Tape Deck.

There are any number of excellent amplifiers out there. The request for 'rack mount' is not necessary, as Middle Atlantic makes rack shelves with custom faces for anything you would reasonably purchase. So, you can go to McIntosh, or Emotiva, or Sonance or you name it for your amplification needs.

I would agree that you may not really need a equalizer anymore due to digital equalization being an integral part of modern A/V receivers.

thanks everybody.

there is no way anything automatic can work like the real thing(regarding Eq)

It looks like I will go with Emotiva.

I found Equalizers(by Harmon Kardon)!!

there is hope!!!

p.s. I have decided to not use my computer for the audio. i will transfer all downloads to cd.

Emotiva has a cd player that looks great.

You might be shocked what a built in parametric EQ and a digital signal processor can do but its your money. BTW most mid priced receivers also have the option to use a built in manual graph equalizer if you don't want to use the built in parametric EQ.

As long as those downloads are lossless to begin with. FWIW almost all of my CDs are in boxes in my storage shed.
