HK AVR 347 Setup error

Installed this receiver today with Infinity TSS 450 speakers. Ran all new 16 gauge wire, used banana plugs to plug into receiver. Finally got everything hooked up, started the auto setup, get tone from the FL speaker, hear a click, get tone from the FL speaker again, this click tone pattern repeats several times and then get an error message saying to check speaker connections. I double checked, everything is connected correctly. HELP! I am just sick. I don't even know where to begin to try and fix this.

Hey, welcome to the forum!

I'm downloading the owner's manual right now. I'll take a look through it and see if I can find anything to help you out.

No problem at all. I just hope that I can help you out with this.

According to the manual, the receiver will use the left front speaker initially to set the master volume level. After that, it will move on to set the volume levels for the remaining speakers. The on screen display (OSD) will show which speaker is being set up at any given time.

When you hear the clicks, but before you get the error message, what does the OSD say?

For example, does it say, "FRONT L Noise Level Checking"? I'm wondering if it says something else, like "FRONT R Noise Level Checking" or "CENTER Noise Level Checking". If it doesn't say "FRONT L ...", then it means that it's trying to move on to another speaker and isn't able to do so.

Please let me know what it says, and we'll try to work through this. Thanks.

I can't remember what the initial message is, but I think it's "Checking noise level: Front L" and never gets beyond that. It will repeat the FL tone, click, FL tone, click thing about 5 or 6 times. I simply can't believe that I screwed up the wiring on 4 of 5 speakers, but I don't know if it's trying to detect a speaker, doesn't get one and just stops without continuing or if it's not detecting 4 speakers. On my old system (a Sony HTIB), there was a button on the remote that allowed me to play a test tone from each speaker, but I don't know if this is possible with this receiver. It's late here, so I will get back to this in the morning. I hope we can figure it out. My HD satellite receiver is being installed Monday, and I won't be a happy camper if I have to settle for the TV speakers! Thanks so much for the help!

Sounds good. Have a good night!

You can choose to run a manual speaker configuration instead of the auto configuration (description starts on page 53 of the manual).

FYI, if you don't have the manual, you can download it here.

Good morning! Took your suggestion and went through the manual setup. My speakers work! Guess maybe I had a defective microphone or something? I don't know and don't care. I have sound! I haven't tried a DVD yet, but when watching a TV show, I am definitely hearing the majority of the sound from the front and center speakers, although there is sound from the surrounds when I get close to them. Might have to try and adjust the balance some. Will try a DVD here shortly. Thanks for the help!

Fantastic! Glad that it's working.

Definitely set the levels somehow, either by getting that auto setup to work or by doing it manually. An SPL meter is a great way to go if you're doing it manually.

BTW, the rear speakers generally won't have much coming out of them while watching TV (or even movies). The bulk of the sound will be coming out of the front three speakers.

Enjoy your DVD!

If you can't get auto setup to run them you need to exchange the reciever for one that works. The one thing that makes the 347 worthwhile is the EZset EQ functionallity. I'm on my second 347, the first was DOA, the second is 90 days old and the video output stopped working (I only use video out for recv setup OSD). My 347 has one other annoying problem where I've set it to remember the surround mode but it keeps setting itself back to surround off when changing channels on my STB. I also have the previous generation AVR340 (no problems, remembers surround modes, etc) and it's worked perfectly for a few years, as did the DPR2005 that was replaced by the 347. I think the 347 is cursed and I'm looking on ebay for used/refurb/nos 340 to replace the 347. I will send the 347 for repair and then sell it.
