HK AVR 340 Installation Help!!!!!

Okay...I am stuck. I have been installing receivers for 20 years. I bought the AVR 340 (used obviously) and hooked it up just like the instructions dictate. The speakers are hooked up correctly (Bose), The DVD player is in Optical 1 (I don't use digital coax) and the satellite/directv is hooked up to Optical 2. Optical 1 is defaulted to the video 2 source as the DVD is defaulted to the digital coax. Therefore, I pushed the source button until I get Video 2 in order to play the sound of my DVD player.

I get nothing! The only thing that gives me sound is AM/FM.

Anyone out there have the same issue and I am just missing something small? I have this feeling that it is something just silly that I am not doing, but I can't figure out what it is!

Go into the menu on the DVD and set it to bitstream.

If you've followed the recommended troubleshooting in the manual and nothing works as it should, well it sounds like it's not working properly. It wouldn't be the first time. Making sure you have everything connected properly, and the correct sources, settings within sources is about all you can do.

Have you tried selecting optical 1 on the receiver? You say it's defaulting to video 2, but it should be optical 1 to hear any thing i'm guessing.

In the AVR 340 instruction, Optical 1's default is the Video 2 source. The Digital Coax default is the DVD source. Beats the poop out of me.

The only other thing I can think of is making sure you have the DVD player outputting properly (as Greg mentioned). You could try changing the Sat and DVD around to see if you can hear any thing? Make sure the receiver is set to Digital too (if you can).

I tried something different. I hooked a video component up out from the receiver to the TV in order to see the entire menu selection. I made the DVD source's default Optical 1 and Video 2 source Optical 2. I have no sound still but now there is something different going on.

In all HK AVR's the speakers that are receiving input light up on the screen on the actual AVR...I only have two blinking (and they should not be blinking! They should be illuminated without blinking)...the Left and Right front speakers. For some oddball reason, the receiver is not getting the signal from the other speakers (the bass module, center and rear surround speakers)...

This is getting more and more weird.

Is there an input selector where you can choose which connection you want? Not the default, but to choose digital, analog, multi-channel or auto input select. On some AVR's, like Denon, you can select multi-channel analog with any source selected. If you are trying to use digital, even with it assigned properly, if the receiver is set to play from the analog input, it will not play. In this case, it may very well display the symptoms you describe. See if you can choose digital input through PCM manually.

Yes, this is what I was trying to say earlier as well by setting the receiver to Digital...try it.

Can you turn to page 34 of your manual, look under "source selection" and confirm that this is what you did?

Are you getting the word "digital" in the upper display line on the front panel?

If the word "digital" does not appear on the front panel, you are either not receiving digital input or you have not selected the digital source for playback. Further, when the speaker icons are flashing, it indicates that there is an interruption in the digital data stream, i.e. no signal.

As I said, even though the source selector you have chosen may well be dvd/opt1, this AVR can assign audio input selections independently of the video source. Just because the input selector says dvd/opt1, doesn't necessarily mean that opt1 is the actively engaged audio source.

What we need to do is get the word "digital" and a full array of speaker icons to display on the front panel to confirm that the HK is actually receiving a digital source. I'm still reading through the AVR340 manual. Unless the unit is FUBAR, we'll get it going.

On the front panel, there is a button labelled "digital select". Does anything happen when you push that?

When I go to the OSD (On Screen Display) and select input setup there is a 'component in' and a 'digital in' and below 'digital in' is 'auto poll'. I have no idea what 'auto poll' is, but when I turn it on it automatically switches the 'digital in' to the analog setting and off of optical 1.

Thoughts?

Yes, this is the same as with my Pioneer receiver. In the upper left it says the input is digital (in small capital letters). The other options are analog or mutli-channel. If it's not on digital, I hear no sound.
