I have 3 questions I wasn't able to get the answer from the manual:

1) If I use the pre-out (to another amp), its a given that the speaker A and B binding posts will still work right?

[the HK's have this pre-out and main in jumper pins you have to remove to use an outboard amp]

2) does the HK have a subwoofer crossover setting? at what frequency? or does the sub out receive full range?

3) does this unit have an OSD?

1) If you use the pre-out without going back to the main in, the speaker output will not work. That is the purpose behind a pre-out/main in. It is designed to be looped through an eq, seperate amp ect.

2) The subwoofer output does not have a crossover to my knowledge. It is full range.

3) No.

This receiver is very versatile as a stereo unit. If you want all the bells and whistles of an Audio Video Receiver, you will be better off purchasing one (an AVR) instead.

can you explain 1) again?

I use a separate amp from the pre-out ... whats gonna go back to the "main-in"? source?
or do I put a wye on the pre-outs and stick it back in the main-in?

also, just in case I do get an AV receiver to use as a stereo receiver ... (if I decide to keep the new AV receiver and dump my old RX-V640)

1) would the HK/Yammy still power the speakers even if an amp is connected to the pre-outs

2) in ALL channel stereo, which speakers act as L and R?
in 6.1 receivers
the front L and R are naturally L and R
the surround L and R are L and R, right?
what about the 2 centers? are they L and R?
in 7.1 receivers
the front L and R are naturally L and R
the surround L and R are L and R, right?
the rear L and R are L and R, right?
what sound does the center produce?

Any AVR in that range with pre-outs for all channels

OR, you can use a Y adaptor and still run to another amplifier as well as returning to the main in.

1) When using the pre-outs on an AVR the speakers (internal amplifier) still continues to work.

2) In a 5,6 or 7 channel stereo mode The front L/R still do L/R duties though some of their information is used in the center. The same would go fro a rear center. The center speaker uses a little information from the left and a little from the right.

The HK3380/3480 would work fine if you use a Y adapter on the pre-outs. One set will run to the separate amplifier and one set to the main in.

What exactly are you trying to do?

These are stereo receivers, not integrated amps.

thanks annunaki.

jgarcia,

i have 6 pairs of JBL SP6C (soundpoint ceiling mount speakers 80w max 8ohms)

Im gonna use them as pipe-in music ... since the HK3380 has speakerA/B binding posts, I plan to connect 2 pairs there. the other 4 pairs to a Behringer EP1500 (stable up to 2 ohms)

I plan to use 6 Sonance VC30RIM (volume controls 30wRMS max with Impedance Matching)

I see. Have you thought about using an impedance matching switch box to do all of this? Or do you need volume control specifically for each pair where they are located? I did a similar install and used one box to handle 3 pairs of speakers, all of them running off one Onkyo stereo receiver via a 4 speaker switch. It has independent volume control for each as well as on and off, but only at the box. Then I used an RF remote to control the Onkyo and a CD changer. Just a thought, but that only applies if you don't need to be able to control the volume of each pair at the point of use. The benefit of this is, the box does the impedance matching and you theoretically could get away with running most if not all the speakers off the one Behringer amp since it is 2 Ohm stable.

the rooms are far apart and must be controlled individually (6pairs = 6rooms)

there are a lot of offers to me about 70 volt lines, main matching, line matching stuff that I dont care to understand because those will require some units in the ceiling ... and if they do die on me, Id have to go into the ceiling. unlike my "barbaric" way of wiring where ALL the equipment are down below and can be removed/replaced on a whim.

Im just afraid about the hazard of fire.
