Hip Hop Music?

I have a new Yamaha RX-V657 receiver and I'm looking upgrade my old Technics speakers (2 towers, center, surrounds). Unlike a lot other home theater enthusiasts I would say that I primarily use my system for music 75% of the time and 25% of the time for movies. My room is 12' x 12'. I am fully prepared to buy the speakers in stages due to budget constraints and was first looking at replacing the towers/fronts. Originally I was looking at the B&W 600 series but my local audio store recommened against them for the reason that my choice of music is primarily hip hop and is bass heavy. He recommended buying a sub to take some of the "weight" off the 600s. He even alluded to me sticking with the Technics towers because of their included subs and my choice of music. I was in hopes of replacing the towers with something smaller in scale since the room is fairly small. I admit I am entry level when it comes to my speaker knowledge so I was wondering if the sound quality for hip hop music would be that much better in the room with new b&w 600 series type/size speakers with a sub (he recommended a def tech sub) or if I should just stick with my old Technics towers? Should I be looking at different better quality towers that deliver more bass and forego the sub? Any bookshelves out there that are known to be adquate for music with heavy bass? Am I better off getting the 600s and a sub? My budget is between $600-$800. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Well, bookshelfs and a sub will do hip hop music fine. Its just you might be bassless until you buy the subwoofer.

I have never heard the 600's, or any B&W for that matter. Other good companys for bookshelfs are Axiom(bassless), BIC(will have the bass your looking for until you get a sub), Energy(sale with their Conusseir line), PSB just ot name a few.

I agree with Sheep. Look at some Athena and Paradigm also.

$600 for a pair of good bookshelf speakers and a good sub can be done. Just make sure you buy a sub that you will be happy with for awhile. The bookshelf speakers can always be used as surrounds in the future when you want to upgrade the fronts.

$400-$600 Towers for hiphop...I would probably go with the Athena AS-F2.2's

Thanks for the feedback guys. It definitely gives me some direction. Just need to get wifey deal with the aesthetics of whatever I decide to go with...new towers or bookshelves and sub. Long live the BASS!!

good bass response & b&w are like oil & water,b&w speaker's are very weak in the bass & will not in any way be a satisfactory speaker for rap/hip hop or rock music,most happy b&w owner's will argue this point but midrange is what b&w does well & it's also what put them on the map.


there are so many better choice's over the b&w line like the NHT super zero's.
