Gidday, I know, it's a bit of a misnomer, but does anyone know of a quality, home theatre in a box?
In fact, I just need the head unit.
It's for a client of mine, he has the speakers...von Schweikel? I believe, but he saw an all in one by Meridian and is determined to find something similar.
Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Cheers

Yea the NAD looks like a real nice piece of equipment. Better go that route. Great sound is paramount.

So you want a receiver/DVD player?
Yeah, that's right, amp/tuner (receiver) with on board DVD...frankly, I think the guy's nuts but...he is the customer and they're always right...right?
Actually the real problem is going to be his speakers, the fronts are going to need 200-300 watts of powr each to work properly which is going to be a struggle with a more conventional set-up, let alone a one box solution.
However at this early juncture, I retain an open mind, so please if anyone else can assist, I'd be forever grateful.

Cheers

If that's the case, I can only think of one thing, but IIRC it's gawd-awful expensive. Please hold while I dig up the link.

Gee wiz, that thing is $25,000. People that just want to throw money away. You could spend less than $10000 easy and get better performance than that getting seperate things.

Get your client one of those White van receiver scams, those things are rated for like 3000 watts.:D (just kidding with you)

You wouldn't happen to have the model numbers to those Von Schweikel speakers would you?

200 -300 wpc? What he needs simply doesn't exist in a one box solution.

It's difficult to tell clients with more dollars than sense that there's no way to get there from here.

I hope you were able to make it plainly clear to him that even that Meridian he wants won't do justice to those speakers on it's own. If not, you're not gonna have a happy client on your hands.

The only option I can see is to use the preamp outs on that Meridian to drive "real" external power amps.

good luck...

How about the DCP501?

It will tune his Cable too! :p

Does he have space requirements or something? Is there any reason for this madness?

It has no component output, and from the reviews it is quite unreliable. It is also a tripath amplifier (a derivitive of Class D) which means it will not likely drive the speakers the client of the OP has. The reviews also say that if it works, it is very difficult to use.

Not possible to get an all in one pushing that kind of power.

There is the Linn Classik system (here)

Just like the NAD, this unit won't put out 200-300 watts per side. Your client will just have to accpet he fact that a seperate rcvr/amp and dvd player will be necessary.

The Linn only weighs 15 pounds, how much power could it possibly have. The NAD woudl likely perform better.

The client is likely going to pay big money for an integrated system like that one for $25k or is going to spend around $5000 possibly less getting seperate components that will do what the client needs.

Yeah, but they don't sound very great. I would compare them to Bose in most respects, sometimes worse.:(
Ive never heard any of the new Nak soundspace HT stuff but a friend of mine has a soundspace 2 channel system that has to be about 20 years old by now & that lil sucker rocks big time, the damm thing has a great tone to it with a decent bass response too.

Don't get me wrong, Nakamichi was good in their time. They have probably been bought out and I kid you not they are horrible. Like Bose they use paper drivers in everything, and everything is made of plastic and particle board. They are super pricey, certainly not worth it for suggested retail prices.

My vote goes for the NAD, but for that amount of power the only option is seperate amplifiers.
