Just won a set of Mackie HR-824 speakers on e-bay for under $600. This is all your fault!!!!!!!! If you did not take me to Scott's house a few years back I would have been content with mere mortal B&W, Paradigm, Klipsch, etc...

Can I get a free set of speaker stands for taking a test drive or something. These suckers are heavy, nearly 35 pounds. Anyone got any ideas about stands. UPS better handle with TLC all the way from the peoples republic of California.

My den will be complete soon.

Congrats on the new speakers! I hope that they arrive in perfect condition.

I'd check out racksandstands.com and see what they've got. They are one of many sites, but they're the one that I remember. :) If you find something that you like, you can probably compare prices at a few different places by searching on the model number.

Found a Audio Tech Sp-24 that supports 50 lbs. I will look on Amazon for a good price.

Where's Steven. Thought I would get a You Suck for this
My speakers should make a nice comparison for Major this summer

Mudshark, I know how you feel, when I went to Mazers a few years ago and he demo'd those Strata Mini's I was hooked and wound up buying the pair at a great price that Mazer negotiated for me. But agree MS, you suck. I love the Mackies.

Congrats :D

Hmmmm never heard about those speakers before, not so much into pro-gear, but these seem to be very interesting indeed

So ... are they really really well performing

Haraldo, the Mackies are fantastic speakers, not only do they have their amps built right into the speaker, but each speaker is individually tested to have a ruler flat frequency response. Most speakers that are made have varying degrees of response that can "color" the sound, but Mackies are just that ruler flat. In fact most recording studios use Mackies when mixing the sound for this very reason and you hear exactly what the recording engineer was listening for when mixing the audio. Just an awesome speaker. If I had to do it all over again, the fortune I spent on Deftechs and Acoustic Research speakers would've gone into Mackies. They also have 8" mid range drivers so they can get very low blending in perfectly with subs. I believe the tweeter has it's own 25 watt amp and the mid range has it's own 125 watt amp built in.

What Matthew said.:D They really are that good and have lusted after some for quite awhile. The den music system is quite Spartan but absolutely perfect for me while working at night (as is often the case).

Next time you are out this way perhaps I can host a little GTG assuming Major nurse maids me the way he did Steven.

I have done a pretty fair job of bringing the S&V members in exile together in this little thread. Hope to see you around more Mathew. The mods need some excitement anyway:D

BTW: They play much louder than I recall at Scott's house. Steven can refresh my memory but I thought we agreed that for HT the amp might have been slightly lacking.

Yeah Mudshark, I miss Mazer over there, so glad to see he visits here. I tend to post more here lately, because it seems alot more is going on here lately, but still call S&V home.

So do they have the same level of perfection for all their products?

Haraldo, Mackie is known for their professional gear and make their equipment to exacting standards. They make everything frrom mixing tables to concert venue speakers, but music companies were so impressed swith what they had done to the live music industry that they hired them to create a speaker that would be ruler flat in frequency response for engineers to mix the music. Hence the H824 Studio Monitor was born, although not known to the general public who shop for Bose and Klipsch, those in the know and professionals use the H824's because they are that good. I have spent only a few hours with them at a GTG in Texas last year and fell immediatly in l,ove with how well it produced the sound without the use of a subwoofer, the sound was just clean and pristine.

From what I know Dynaudio is used in many Stduios all over and are more well known to the general public.... from what I read above you wouldn't hesitate and rate Mackie's H824 above any of the Dynaudio's... Yes?

Or... do you have the knowledge to really compare them, anybody?

Haraldo, I looooooooove Dynaudio's but you have to remember that Dynaudios cost about 5 times what the Mackies cost. So at that point it becomes a point of diminishing returns. Is it really worth spending 5 times as much for a small increase in sound quality. Most here would say yes, but since we would have to answer to significant others who if they found out how much you spent on Dynaudio's would literally remove "the boys" with a dull butter knife while screaming, "you spent how much?????" Meanwhile the S.O. will tell you she can't hear the difference between Dynaudio and Radio Shack Optimus speakers. For the average Joe who is in the know, then Mackies are the way to go, if money or a screaming partner aren't issues then hell yeah get the Dynaudios.
BTW the Dynaudios are some of my all time favorite speakers, I just can't afford em....No matter how many times I tell my GF to hit the streets to earn me more duckets. ;)

Well I never listened to any of the active / pro Dynaudio modles, but.... I never heard a Dynaudio I dislike, most of them are very darn good, and some are yes..... expensive

Favorite: Contour S 3.4 :D but now we're pricey
Actually I thinks Contour S3.4 plays better than it's bigger brother S5.4, Think S3.4 is more alive, quicker, nicer......

And the Contours S1.4 bookshelfs, bl¤¤#" h¤¤# it plays fantastic..... wonderful wonderful speaker :D

Contour's one of my favorites also. You have good taste. I would rank the Mackies slightly below the Contours (if the Countors are a 10, I would rank the Mackies a strong 8.5) and I heard the Mackies hooked directly to a receiver s preouts while the Contours I heard hooked up to active crossovers and very powerful amp and the Mackies still did an impressive job.
