So I thought I'd start here.

I just recently got my first real speaker setup. I received my right/left speakers for free, so I decided to spend what I needed to get everything started (spent $570 +taxes in Canadian dollars on the sub & receiver). What I have is a 2.1 system (currently):

- Right Front: Energy RC-Mini
- Left Front: Energy RC-Mini
- Subwoofer: Energy ESW-C8
- Receiver: Pioneer VSX-520-K

I will be adding to the system to make it a 5.1 eventually. The next step will probably to make it a 3.1, then finish it off as a 5.1 a few months later.

Would it be best to just finish the whole system off with the same brand speakers? I'm looking to probably spend about $250 per speaker.

Also, are the RC-Minis I have currently best suited as front R/L speakers (in a relatively small room)? I'm looking for the best quality sound. I'm not sure, when I get my additional 2 speakers, whether I should just get 2 more RC-Minis... or if I should move my current R/C minis to being the side speakers and not front speakers.

Thanks. I'm new to all this.

Ideally, all the speakers (other than the subwoofer) will be identical. However, the front to back matching is far less important than matching across the front. When a sound pans across the front, you don't want it to change tonal quality, and that means you want the front three speakers to be "voice matched", which, again, ideally would mean having exactly the same speaker in each place. But you can use the same manufacturer's matching center speaker if you prefer.

The reason why front to back matching is less important is because of the way the channels are typically used, as well as the fact that you can't hear as well behind you as in front of you (which is one reason why people tend to face things they want to hear; the other reason being that they often want to see them as well).
