If you think, as I do, that speaker quality is not a question of what you personally like, but of what is ACTUALLY perfect (or as close as you can get to it) reproduction: what's the flatest and least distortion-prone speaker under 5 grand for a room that's 14 x 20 x 11 1/2 (height) measured in feet.

(Currently running ProAc Response 1sc... too small for the room size.... sounds tinny as a result... not even remotely flat....blown away by the likes of the humble Mackie HR824 active monitors which are now in the basement).

Help or suggestions much appreciated.

I guess you could call me a sucker for Monitor Audio. If I had that budget, I'd buy a pair of their Platinum towers (used). The monitors run about $4,600 (MSRP, new) - which is why I recommended the towers used as I've seen them on Audiogon in the past. There's currently a pair of the monitors (PL100) for $2,600 at the moment.

But it is what you like. A person who listens primarily (or exclusively) to electronic music may have a completely different goal of reproduction, than one who listens to acoustic music. There is a lot of personal preference when it comes to reproduction of what you like.
The size of the room is one thing. The placement of the speakers within the room, that you (or your wife) will allow for, is another thing entirely. Aesthetics will overrule acoustics for the vast majority.

You may want to look into studio gear designed for professional audio mixers. That's more likely to have a flatter response. Try to avoid "nearfield" monitors, they are designed for a listener being very close to them.

There's a lot of totally beautiful women out there that, for some reason or another, cannot stay married to someone.

As for sound, exactly what is "perect reproduction"? Does it exist in a concert hall? a small jazz club? A church, or a stadium? ..or what?

If you mean flat as a ruler in an anechoic chamber, how does a real-world listening environment affect that?
