Update

Not much to update you all on accept that the local repair center called and said that the regional repair center has the unit and that that once the repair is complete they will be keeping it a few days to test it before they ship it back.

BTW, the eastern US repair center is United Redio in NY.

Picked it up September 3, 2010

So the local repair shop, Atlantic Systems Electionics in Hanover, MA called me on Wednesday, September 1 and told me they received my unit back from the Eastern regional repair center United Radio located in Syracuse, NY. I told them I would pick up the unit on my day off Friday, September 3, 2010.

Picked up the unit September 3. The paper work states the service performed as:

Part Replaced Electrical
Replaced defective Sys Control Circuit
Clean & Check unit operation - OK

Anyways, after getting it hooked up I notice a few things which don't give me a high confidence level the unit was thoroughly looked over and tested.

1. The language was left in Chinese
2. Advanced Setup Firmware verification ERROR
3. All video processing was set to pass through

What really bothered me was the unit *NOT* displaying the current firmware version but displaying ERROR. Lucky me, being an advanced user and a software engineer I kept my fingers crossed that if I performed a firmware upgrade this issue may be corrected.

After 10 mins into a network firmware upgrade the display status indicated a network error EA2. Luckily I am persistent and tried again with *SUCCESS*. Whew......Frimware Version 1.11.

So far the unit seems fine but it will take some time for me to have a a better confidence level.

I feel for you guys. Purchased a RXZ7 in March 2009.

My Z7 died back in July 2010. The receiver would only power up via the main power button. I contacted Yamaha Support, and was provided with a link to put in my zip code and take my unit to the nearest service center.

It took six weeks to replace the digital video board. When I got the unit home, I noticed several screws from the back missing. I also had the firmware error and had to reload.

Over the past couple of months, I have noticed that my presense speakers do not always work when they are supposed to. About 50% of the time, I have to shut the receiver off, then turn on - then the presense speakers work. I contacted Yamaha Support and was told the processor requires repair. I was provided with the same canned message to click on link, enter zip code, and take unit to the nearest service center.

I am somewhat lucky as there are 2 service centers in metro Detroit. I will not be taking it to the service center that I used previously. So, I will reluctantly try the other service center. I foresee my receiver being gone another 6 weeks. :(

I have owned other Yamaha receivers and never had an issue. The Z7 has made me sick - I spent alot of money on a "Flagship" receiver that gets little support. Yamaha does not care - they have our money. They have no intent on making it right.

I guess while the Z7 is out for repairs, I will start researching various brands of AVRs for a replacement - and Yamaha is no longer on my list.

Seems customer support is getting dreadful all over. Marantz where getting beat up last night.

This will work to the advantage of good independent dealers. I think I would only purchase a high priced unit from a dealer I know and trust.

Things may cost a little more at an independent dealer but if its one thats tursted, I rather pay the extra money for the peace of mind knowing he'll have my back should things go wrong.

Hate to see this thread. Don't know how I missed it.:(

I believe I have had my Z7 for a little over three years. It is used every day, and I have had 0 issues.

My unit has been used as a pre-pro from day 1.

I have never done a firmware update.

I hope everything is well with your unit now.
