Hello. I'm having difficulty with my Yamaha receiver and hope somebody can help me. I have two issues, but I think they're both related.

Recently we moved and an A/V installer re-installed the receiver. It was wired the same way as before. Now, it won't play certain sources (anything except DVD) in Surround and the display, even when in 6ch stereo, does NOT display the other speakers. The only two speakers shown are L and R.

The DVD works fine in Surround and all speakers play and all the speaker indicators light up. I go straight component video from it to the TV and use the digital input to the rcvr for audio. It works fine that way.

My cable box goes hdmi to TV and I have straight (L/R) audio coming in from my Cable/DVR like before, but can't get it to play in Surround as I was before. I used to be able to select the Surround mode I'd want, and it would work fine with audio coming out of all speakers and the indicator lights showing all speakers as well.

thank you for your help! Dan

The l/r rca is not needed from cable box to receiver. Remove it. HDMI handles audio, as well as video. If all you have is l/r going to the receiver, that is all you are going to get. You need to go HDMI to the receiver, AND HDMI to the tv.

The lights on the receiver indicate the input of the source, not your selection. If the show is in surround, the lights will be on. If it's not broadcast in surround, they will be off.

Dan,

The HTR-5950, like most Yammy AVRs, front display speaker lights indicate "incoming audio channels" and not which speakers are putting out sound. See manual page 9-10 item #24, as opposed to the DSP Surround Field indicators (klingon looking display graphic), item #3, which partially indicates which speakers are active, only for surrounds and presence (if you use them).

This is also explained on manual page 72-73 under the "2-channel audio (stereo)" column. Note many of the sound programs do output to the center, surrounds, and for the PLIIx programs also the rear surround speakers, when provided only a stereo input signal.

For the DVD, the reason the display lights all illuminate is the digital audio input, which is providing input from all 5.1 audio channels.

For "6-channel stereo", the speaker display of only L/R mains is normal, since that is the signal coming into the AVR (even though this 2-channel signal is being sent out to all connected speakers).

One way to verify "6-channel stereo" mode is working properly is to; use a stereo input source (like FM or CD), turn off both Speakers A and B, then it is easier to hear/verify the sound from the center and surrounds.

Are you sure you did not previously have the cable box (or TV) connected to the AVR for audio with an optical cable? This would have provided the requiste inputs to illuminate the indicator lights when using TV as you remember.

IMHO the installer changed the cable box to AVR cable arrangement, eliminated a optical connection in lieu of an analog stereo connection. Or, less likely, he inadvertently changed a MENU SETUP item which is preventing the AVR from matrixing 2-channel stereo to the other speakers.

Cheers,

Zumbo,

It is the 5950 that lacks HDMI, that is why he is connecting as described.
