My focus is on 2-channel faithful reproduction of acoustic instrumental music (jazz, classic, etc.)
Got B&W 704, paired them with integrated amp Rotel 1062 - I like B&W details and staging, and the mellow and sweet sound that 1062 brings to B&W 704.
I want to expand this system to multi-channel, will get B&W HTM7 as central to match 704s, and a pair of some cheaper ones for rear speakers (something from 600 series).
I am also looking for a receiver that will give me quality 2-channel and sound I like.
That is where I am in total dark, I cannot find it. For example, I listened to Rotel RSX-1067 and it totally killed all the details and sweetness from the music, compared to small 2-channel 1062. Sound is very harsh, unrealistic.

Has anyone paired B&W 704s with any multi-channel receivers that deliver good stereo performance, and do not sound harsh?
I read abut Yamaha’s Pure Direct feature, so it may be a way to go, but then again some reviews say that Yamaha’s receivers are no longer what they used to be in terms of mellow sound they produce, now are focused on home theater and produce very harsh sound, what I do not like?
Any experience or recommendations here?
For the price range, I would not go above $2,800.00.

I don't think you'll find the sweetness in todays receivers, whether they are two channel or 7.1, that you'll find in the earlier models from the 70's and even some in the 80's. I have a mid 70's Pioneer unit that has a depth and crispness I just can't get with my high end Denon. The Denon sounds excellent, but different. Some of the older Marantz amps and receivers have that same "tube" sound. McIntosh amps produce a similar sound. You have quite a budget to get just about anything you want. I suggest you go separates and demo some McIntosh amps if you want to stay current. Otherwise, go mid 70's and check ebay for some deals.

Here's a few classics.
