I have narrowed it down to these receivers.
(1) Denon 789
(2) Yamaha 663
(3) Marantz SR4002
I am hoooking up a Dish HD-DVR (hdmi),Panasonic Bluray player(hdmi) and my Xbox 360. I have been told that the cheapest way to do my setup is using the marantz and connect the HD-DVR and Bluray via the hdmi and the xbox via component and optical.I was told to set the bluray to LCPM to get Dolby true Hd/DTS HD-MA and I would be set. That would leave me one free hdmi for the future. I can get the Yamaha 663 for 100.00 bucks more, and the Denon for 200.00 more.Just was wondering If I needed too or not. Thanks

I have the RX-V863 and am very happy. This is my 3rd Yamaha. Your idea on DVR and Blu ray through hdmi, then x-box through component would work. Too bad the 663 only has 2 hdmi's. Good choices which ever one you decide on. Good luck!

I just read your response to "tech-freak" and noticed you are the proud owner of a yammi RX-V863...

I also just recently put together my first system since about the time when Dolby Surround sound was being introduced to home entertainment! With that being said I am a little less than literate with the new equipment and all the science behind it. I was wondering if you could give me a few pointers on how you have your system set up.

I am running EMP compact speakers front, center and rear with one EMP sub. I have a panasonic blu-ray and a panasonic 50 plasma HD1080. I have everything wired in right, I am just looking for optimal settings for everything now. My sub has built in volume and crossover settings and my speakers are rated at 8 ohms.

I do not know if our systems are comparible but even if the are not could you let me in on how you have stuff set up?

Cheers;)

Does your system have a manual? Usually this is a great place to start(exception Denon)

If you receiver has an auto setup. You should run it. once you get your speakers placed. Usually that's a combo of aesthetics and best SQ.

But generally Dolby.com has the best guideline for positioning speakers.

If not. You can just use your ears to level match and LR using the test tones.

Generally bookshelves cross from 80 to 100hz depending on the low response.

Satellites from 100 to 120hz. I suggest you consult EMP for more specific suggestions.

This is my experience others may differ.

If you can afford the Denon then go for it.

If you can't then go with the Marantz.(accessories4less has crazy deals on those)

If I remember right the 663 has only two HDMI inputs. I would go with the Marantz because it has 3 HMDI inputs and a full set of pre-amplifier outputs.

I say go for the 789 if you can afford it. I love my Denon, now the manual will be worthless but they are pretty easy to set up and enough of us have one so if you need help we'll be here. Wish my 2808 had 3 HDMI inputs, but if I need more than the 2 I have I'll just get a switcher.

Thanks for the insight... I ran the automatic setup when I purchased the unit and have ran it a few time since screwing around with different things. It works well but just like the manual would suggest that I set my reciever to 6 ohms for the speakers I know I am better off and that my speakers can handle being set at 8 ohms. With that being said it comes down to more fine tuning and how one application or setting might work better with another. Almost like photography I guess:confused:... Also the manual to me reads more like scientific reference to alot of concepts, technical specifications and terminology I am just not AT ALL familiar with thus me trying to gain any and all I can from AVSF's like yourself (audio/video special forces).

I did speak to EMP back when I purchased the speakers but I will put another call into them also now that I know a little more and can interpret what they are trying to tell me.

Thanks again!

I have Athena Technology Towers for the L/R which I set to small. I set my center and surrounds to small as well(also Athena). I put the volume on my Paradigm PDR-10 on Max and the c/o to 80db, which is advised here and everywhere else. I ran the auto set-up and wasn't pleased. Thunderous bass on movies, barely any on music. It also got the speaker distance wrong. I cancelled it and did it manually. I used the test tones from the rcvr and dialed it in with a spl meter from The Source(30 bucks) while keeping all speakers set to small. For the sub,I had to back off the volume to mid-way and used the internal c/o in the 863 and kept the 80db setting for my PS3, but went higher, 85 for ipod and 90 for FM. I like how the rcvr has individual settings for each input. I increased the 2 surround spkrs 1 step and the single surround rear 2 steps (it was further away) for personal preference.
I am fairly new to this and have tweaked it quite a bit and probably will continue to do so.
There's a lot of people on this site who are fairly dialed-in and very helpful . That great for newbies like you and I.
Lotsa luck!

When using the avrs crossover either turn the subs crossover to max or disable it. Also 80 hz is an easy place to start, but depending on the speakers and sub, better results could be had . As you stated, you backed off the full volume which is the right thing to do. Ivè never run my subs much over a 1/4 volume. If needed run them a little hot from the avr.

I can take a guess, but the manufacturer knows their drivers and design and knows exactly where it should be crossed at safely.
