Help with options?

Hi, I want to start putting together a new home theater system. However, I don't have the money at the moment to drop on an entire system all at once. I currently have a crappy LG LHT764 HTIB. My room is 12'x14'x8' and my price range at the moment is roughly $300-450. Here are the specs of my current HTIB and the speakers: ht tp://tinypic.com/r/rkvqfb/3

I plan on moving in a little bit less than a year, so I have no clue what that room size will be like. Currently only 5.1 would work good in my room, but that's not to say that 7.1 won't be an option in the near future. The main use for the home theater system will be for TV, movies, and gaming. Do you guys think I would be able to get a good receiver now to work with my current speakers, and upgrade the speakers in a couple months? Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum!

While you could get a new receiver for those speakers, there are some things to be aware of:

• Your satellite speakers are listed as having impedances of 4 ohms. That's below the recommended value for a lot of receivers, although several can handle it without it being a safety issue (but the receiver might go into protection mode because the current draw is too high).
• Your subwoofer is passive, and stand alone receivers don't have amplified circuits for subwoofers. You'd need to amplify the subwoofer separately. That can be done, but it's something to consider.
• Unless you are looking for additional features, a new receiver might not add anything to your system. The sound quality is likely limited by those speakers and not by the receiver unit that you are using.

Are there particular features that you are wanting to add to your system?

EDIT: I just noticed your edit that you'd be looking for speakers in a couple of months and not (if I remember correctly) a year from now. You can make it work, but you may want to seriously consider picking your speakers first and then getting a receiver that will power them sufficiently.

I did the same thing 4 years ago I bought a Yamaha receiver and then little by little upgraded all my speakers when I had the money this is what I have to date

I absolutely love my system makes movies come alive, receiver is 7.1 but only have 5.1 setup waiting to buy my next pair of speakers

Took me 4 years but I am happy and no regrets

Thanks for the quick response! I mainly want to add all of the newest Audio codecs (DTS HD etc...). Also I want to add more hdmi and optical ports. Currently my HTIB only has one optical in port and no hdmi in ports. However, I have a ps3, xbox360, and a cable box that I want to all have surround sound for. My main reason for wanting to upgrade is that I have noticed some of my blu-rays only do surround sound in DTS, however, the LG LHT764 cannot decode the DTS signal quick enough, thus voices do not match up with the video. I have tried every option imaginable for the ps3 and the LG to fix the problem, but nothing works.

I definitely don't need sound that is absolutely amazing and will rattle my apartment, but I do want something that sounds good.
