Hello,

I am trying to find out where is the problem, when i crank up my Yamaha RX-V2700 my MA -GS20 starts to become distorted at 0dB, some people said its the amp not giving them enough power, some said its the speakers, what i would like to find out is if someone got a pair of these speakers how loud do they go? And how can the loudness be measured?

Thanks

I think 0 db is the clip point of the Yamaha receivers into most loads. In other words that is as loud as they go.

Those MA GS 20s although being nominally six ohm will be in fact four ohm were most of the power is, and may be lower.

A typical receiver like yours will likely only deliver 70 watts into those speakers.

How loud are you trying to play them anyway? As getting half the power from your receiver is only a 3db reduction in spl.

If you need more power then you need external amplification. Unfortunately your receiver does not have preouts as far as I can tell. If that is the case you need a more powerful receiver able to really drive four ohm loads, or a low powered receiver that has preouts, so you can add external amplification.

Well i don't know how loud it is i am playing them at, but i sometimes need a lot of sound and distortion is not an option :)

The RX-V2700 has preouts, but it only has 1 preout for front speakers, so i am guessing i would have to get a stereo amp which would power both of them. I was looking at Yamaha P3500S or the 5000 series, if you say it is the amp not being able to give them enough power then i might consider getting the amp, unless there is better options? and how much increase in quality and loudness can i expect?

Thanks in advance...

No, your Yamaha should drive those speakers plenty loud enough to deafen you and it has pre-outs for 7.1 channels, including both fronts.

I hope you are not trying to deafen yourself. You can get an spl meter at radio shack and then see if you are listening at levels that will make you deaf.

However the amplifier speaker interface is complicated. So it is possible with that combination you can not achieve the spl you want, assuming it is an appropriate spl.

Her is why.
