help with hdmi output

Help. I purchased a Samsung HT-AS720 theater system last year to go along with my new tv and ps3. Just recently the HDMI output has been giving me issues. When watching TV (direct tv) it will lose all signal when changing channels. Sometimes it will just lose video. I have tried several HDMI cables, all give the same results. Is this receiver about to die, or is there something i can do in order to eliminate this issue. Samsung said 160 to repair. Any ideas?

I know the Samsung is not the greatest receiver, but it was cheap and worked great for my small place.

Have you tried it hooked to the display direct? Does it happen on all channels or when switching from SD to HD ?

Happens on all channels. Will work fine for several hours. Then it just goes bad. Going direct from direct box to tv works with no issues.

Have you tried power cycling the receiver when it gets flaky? Maybe that will reset whatever is wonky.

Since Samsung can offer a price to repair I tend to think this isn't the first time they have encountered it.

I see two choices.

1) Pay Samsung the $160 to fix it. or...

2) Run the cable box HDMI directly to the TV and a coaxial digital connection to the receiver, assuming it will accept a non-HDMI digital audio input. Use the TV to select the video and the receiver to select the audio.

# 2 is certainly a workaround, but paying almost half the price to get it fixed is something to consider also.

I will try power cycling again. I dont mind the 160. I just dont want to wait forever for it to come back. My new blu ray player is coming on Thursday and i would like to have surround sound. Thanks everyone for the input.

I was at work when i responded previously. I though it would do it whenever. It turns out it only does it when switching from HD to SD channels. So the next questions is does this mean that my reciever will not automatically switch, or is there some settings i should be looking for.
