help with a subwoofer decision

Opinions usually are ;)

Since I was the one doing the switching, there was no way to do it blind. But to say "because it's not blind, it's not valid" isn't completely accurate either, otherwise we'd have no car reviews :) Preferable? Yes. Completely invalid results if its not blind? No.

Others may come to different conclusions, as with all things. Overall, i like the ultra better since you get more/nicer finish options. But soundwise i couldn't give the edge to either. One man's opinion, yours may differ.
The Axiom has better sound quality, the SVS will be louder.
These are very vague, and bold statements. They're VERY subjective. Considering the SVS has many different tunings, you has many different sounds. Don't have to do anything to piece that together. You didn't really give any information other then that statement.

If you want to be helpful, tell the whole story, the first time.

The original poster found them helpful.

I'm not sure why you feel the need to argue with me about my opinion of a sub which you've never heard.

I'm uncertain what "whole story" you're referring to, as you seem to imply i'm hiding something. Plugging the ports doesn't make the sub play cleaner, just deeper. Of course you'd know that, if you actually heard the sub. Wait, why are you here again? :p

If you need corroboration, Audioholics reviewers seemed to mirror my thoughts:

Plus/2:
Bass Extension: 5/5
Bass Accuracy: 4/5
Plus/2 Review

EP500:
Bass Extension: 5/5
Bass Accuracy: 5/5
EP500 Review

Both the above have better SQ than a Bose bass module. How's that for bold and subjective? :)

Don't get me wrong, i love the Plus/2. As should the people that own them. They're awesome subs.

A blind test, with measurements will give the actual performance.

i'd just like to say thanks to everyone who's expressed opinions regarding my initial question. it seems to have gotten slightly contentious lately but i have to say that when i asked the question i was looking to solicit opinions, as reviews for both subs are readily available.

looks like right now i would like to audition the axiom and the ultra, as the finish is a definite part of the WAF.

thanks again to all of you, this has been very helpful.

Keep in mind that the Axiom finish is Vinyl.... and has square edges...
Where the fit and finish on the SVS is far better...

If WAF is truly important, I would go for the SVS, I have 2, Piano Black and Rosenut are both great..

Sound Quality is really good, I wouldn't say flawless, but really good in my eyes..

i would put my vote in for the new ultra. the axiom ep500 is too expensive for what you get:

fixed tuning
limited connection options (LFE input or speaker input, no highpass outputs)
boxy and cheap appearance (e.g. 90 degree corners, vinyl)
high distortion as per 3rd party measurements

i'm thinking the port is tuned higher than 18hz, but the axiom makes up for it via EQ ... which results to distortion? (just theorizing why it was measured with high distortion)

I was giving advice on the Plus/2 and I also have a Plus...

I haven't heard the Ultra13... but If I were on the market for a new sub, it would be the Ultra13 also...
