Help with a Canton Plus C passive subwoofer.

Hello!

I have a Canton Plus C passive subwoofer that has a broken element i think. Im wondering what I should do with it? Should I just take the speaker and trash the box with everything in it or should I replace the broken element? In which case where can I get a element from? I have searched high and low for one and I cant find it. I was wondering if I should build a active sub with the speaker if the first option is better.

Can I do anything else? What options do I have that I didnt know of etc. How would you do if you were sitting in my place and what do I need if I would rebuild the box?

Oh well hang on ill put a pic of the thing that is broken, dont know what it is called. Got told it was a element but i guess it was wrong then.
Well disnt find a picture but it looks like a coil. Either way that "coil" is bent and broken and i assume that it has some form of purpose

That subwoofer was part of a set I find out. It can only be used with the speakers designed to be used with it. What you are looking at is part of the crossover network. That sub contained a passive crossover at 120Hz to send frequencies below 120Hz to the sub and frequencies above to the satellites. You are describing a broken inductor in the crossover.

Honestly that type of system is a very poor design. I don't how good the sub is but probably not good, as that is a poor design concept.

The only way to salvage the sub, is to remove the crossover, and connect the driver to the input terminals, and drive the sub from and external amp, connected to the sub out of a receiver or pre/pro.

I honestly doubt it is worth the trouble or expense.

It would be unusual for a coil to get bent and broken in a crossover. Can you still post a good photo so we can see which part is broken? Are there any values written on the part?

OP may have trouble posting pics/links if he's very new. Or running into file size restrictions (use a resizing program, in Windows Paint has such, I usually use 30-35% of original size).

I'm wondering just what the part is myself, would love to see a pic.

This is how the inside looks. Sorry for my lack of knowledge but im here to learn. Got this one for free by a neighbour and I just really like sound systems in generall. And idk how good the speaker it self is since ive never heard it nor teied it before. It might be the speaker it self that is broken idk. I opened it up when I got it and I just noticed that one of the "coil looking thingy" was bent af and ive assumed that, that was the problem. On second thought, the previous owner told me it was a filter that had been blown or something along those lines. Either way i really appriciate all the vomments and help from all of you!

Update!
The thing that is broken is called a drossel/filter. It is the left one that is broken. The nr on it is 3621 and the values is 3.5 mh 0.6 ohms. Not sure if anything is 100% accurate but found a page where a guy had similar problems. I think I inow what to do here on forward.

The thing that is broken is called a drossel/filter. It is the left one that is broken. The nr on it is 3621 and the values is 3.5 mh 0.6 ohms. Not sure if anything is 100% accurate but found a page where a guy had similar problems. I think I inow what to do here on forward.

What it is, is a couple of 2 way second order filters. So the woofer must be dual voice coil as it would otherwise, blow up any amp connected to it.

The high pass coil on the left has come off the base, and probably broken the coil wire.

So you need a 3.5 mh 0.6 ohm coil.

So each low pass goes to its own coil on the dual VC of the woofer. The high pass section goes to the satellites, which presumably has another crossover with a band pass and another high pass crossover in each speaker.

This is pretty crude engineering, and I would not have your expectations on great sound set too high.

I have qnother question tho. Would I be able to connect any 4 ohm satellites to the sub or am I limited to the ones that came originally with it?

You are absolutely limited to the speakers it came with. This is an integrated design.

The only way you could use different speakers, would be to remove the crossovers. You need to measure the impedance of the two VCs, then you could decide if they need to be connected in series or parallel. Then you connect the coupled VCs, to the input terminal of the sub. Then you would need an external amp, to best drive the impedance you selected.

Now you need a receiver. Connect the speakers of your choice to the right and left outputs of the receiver. Then you would connect the subwoofer output of the receiver to your amp to drive the sub. Now connect the output of the sub amp to the terminals on the sub.

I highly doubt that sub is worth that much expense and trouble, and would not advise it on economic grounds.
