I am a newbie.. I am looking at the the onkyo 801 or the 702..I can get them both at about $700.00. Please don't laugh too much at me. But I have sony ss-k70ed for fronts and sony sa wx700 sub. older sony surround speakers. I am wanting to take the next couple steps and upgrade. If someone with some expertize could give some advice. Also what would be a good center speaker for the 2 receivers. I saw a polk csi hooked up to the 801 at circuit city, it sounded good.

Please be gentle...

thanks

which onkyo to buy ? any one that doesn't end in a 2... posts here and other places are filled with horror stories of video drop-out on 502's and 602's

they appear to have some serious QC problems right now with the newer line.

the x00's and x01's sereis are well regarded.

Hi jt88fan,

Why not try Onkyo's Integra series of receivers. I think they are a little better than the Onkyo's in the sound quality department. And I beleive two of the Integra's would fit into your budget.

Happy shopping...

Hi Jt88,

My first investment in HT 4 or 5 years ago was with a 575.
It is now in another room and I don't think the power has been turned off more than 3 times in all those years and it has worked great at I think about 70 or 75w per channel.

Before you invest, think of the size of your room and if you upgrade your speakers you will need enough juice to fill the room and get the best from your speakers. You therefore would prefer a reciever thats strong enough to give great sound at low volumes.

I basically followed my brother and used Paradigms which are excellent value and worked very well with the 575. I understand that Axioms are also a happy marriage and I still use a pair of wall mounted dipole qs4's for surround in film but if you have just one pair of surrounds and listen to music alot, direct firing of either would be great and if you can get a matching set of 5 it will really help if you like dvd-a and sacd.
