Help Setting up Yamaha HTR -6140

I recently bought 4 infinity beta 20 speakers, a 250 center, and a dayton sub. I also got a Yamaha HTR -6140 to go along with my new speakers.

For the record, I am terrible at this technicle stuff. I've spent the last three days trying to hook up my DVD player and Sonia Bravia LCD up to the receiver with no real success whatsoever.

Right now I have two problems.

Problem number 1 is that I can only get sound out of the front two speakers for some reason when I put a CD in my DVD player. I have the DVD player hooked up to the receiver via coaxial audio cable and composite video cable.

Problem number 2 is that I can't get any sort of video signal to my TV I have the three component video cables going from my receiver to TV. On the receiver end they are hooked up under the monitor out section, on the TV, I have then in the component 1 section.

I think both these problems may be caused by some sort of set-up I haven't done. I have a feeling that all the cables are hooked up correctly because I did a setup feature that figured out the room size and that test made sound come out of every speaker. Also, when I first hooked up my TV an Auto Setup display popped up on my TV under component 1. It said press enter to start, but pressing enter didn't do anything so I just turned off the receiver. Now I can't get that Auto Setup display back on my TV.

Hi. Here's some info/questions:
  1. For only getting stereo playback on CDs, that's normal. You could use one of the surround sound modes to get music to play back through more than two speakers. Did you mean "DVD" instead of "CD"? If so, that could very well have to do with a setting on the DVD player in which you'll want to set the audio output to "bitstream" or something similar. Let us know which DVD player you have, and we can help you with that.
  2. Regarding the video issue, I searched through the owner's manual for the 6140 to see if the component video inputs are assignable, but I couldn't find any references to that. Just make sure that you connected the component video from the DVD player to inputs on the back of the receiver that correspond to the input source that you are selecting (I'm guessing that you are using the "DVD" input). You might also have to set up the DVD player to output through the component video outputs. Again, let us know which player, and we can help with that. Have you tried connecting the video cables from the DVD player directly to the TV? If so, did that work?

Thanks so much for the reply. Your second piece of advice fixed the majority of my problem.

My only problem now, which is a problem I forgot to mention in my first post is that I am getting no sound out of my Daton - 100 subwoofer. My old yamaha subwoofer only out one input slot. I had a cable that ran from the back of the receiver to the subwoofer.

My new sub is much more complicated on the back. It has one red/white input port and one for output that say mono. They also have the red/black slots for bare speaker wire which I don't know what to do with. Right now I just have the black cable from my old yamaha sub running from the receiver to the right(red) low level input slot. Thats what I think it said to do in the very small manual that came with the subwoofer.

The quote from the manuel says this " If you have a mono line level signal from a Pro Logic or Dolby digital receiver use the right red input".

Does my receiver have a mono line level signal from Pro Logic or Dolby digital?. I'm thinking maybe I have the wrong kind of cord. In the receiver manual it says I need a monaural RCA cable for the subwoofer.

In regards to connections, you will want to use an RCA cable from the "SUBWOOFER OUTPUT" jack on the back of the receiver to the line-level input(s) on the sub. If the sub manual said to use the right input, then that's the way to go. Sounds like you've done all of that correctly.

To get bass to come from the sub, you need to set up the receiver to do that. The speaker set-up menu is explained starting on page 63 of the owner's manual. With your Beta 20 bookshelves, I recommend that you set those to "SMALL", and do that with your center channel, too. With that setting, the bass frequencies from those speakers will be sent to the sub (once you set the "LFE/BASS OUT" setting to "SWFR").

If you're already done that and still aren't getting sound from the sub, please let us know.

EDIT: We can also help you fine tune things, such as setting the crossover frequency (on the receiver and on the sub), as well as the volume level for the sub. Let us know if you'd like us to do that.

Set the surround mode on those inputs to Dolby Plx2 music or DTS neo six.

If there are 5-2-5 DTS broadcasts in your area set it to neural 6 for the tuner.

I think Minnesota is about the only place in the world were those broadcasts are happening though.
