Help! Rear speaker distortion

I have the Onkyo HT-S3400. It has been working great, but I'm experiencing distortion on a couple of channels (using Dish) on my rear left and right surround sound speakers. The listening mode is set to Dolby Pro Logic PL II Movie, which I can hear the audio of the program, but severely distorted. When I switch to All Ch Stereo or Full Mono, it works fine. If these certain channels don't broadcast in Dolby, shouldn't there be no audio at all coming from the rear speakers or automatically switching to another listening mode?

Is there any way to get around having to manually switch the listening mode to dodge the distortion? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Dolby Pro Logic takes two channels and "synthesizes" more channels. This means it sort of fudges with the sounds to create somewhat of a semelance of sounds to send to the rear channels. Some two channel sources work OK, some don't.

DPL is not an exact science. All the receivers DPL circuitry sees is a two channel signal and does the best it can with what it's got to work with. If you don't like the sound fron non-DPL channels, all I can suggest you set the receiver to pure stereo.

About the only way to avoid this is to run the exact same pure mono signal to both front channels which will, in a perfect world, result in only the center channel putting out any sound.

Thanks Mark! I'll deal with the small inconvenience of manually switching it.
