Help Picking a Compact Sub

My experience with my NHTs was very similar when paired with the receiver that I bought around the same time in 1998: good for home theater, harsh for music. My current receiver, which I got in 2005, has an auto set-up routine that includes equalization of the speakers. It made a very nice difference. It removed the harshness that I had dealt with for 7 years. I even noticed that home theater sounded more enjoyable to me. I'm very glad that I now have some equalization for my NHTs.
Hmmm. Interesting that you heard the same thing. I am glad I am not crazy. Anyway, I will most likely be getting a Denon with Audyssey MultEQ room setup. Do you think that will have the same effect of lowering the harshness as your newer receiver did?

I would certainly think that it would. NHTs (at least when I bought mine) were known for their neutral (so, I'm thinking flat) response. It could be that the room acoustics were just making them sound unpleasant to me - and it seems, to you. The EQ in my Pioneer did wonders, and the Audyssey MultEQ seems like a very good system, too.

Update on my sub search.

I managed to find a way to fit in a bigger sub, plus my budget was getting up there. Anyway, I decided on the PB10-NSD. It saves me $250 over the SB-12Plus. Since I listen to 80% movies, I think it will suit me better anyway. Also, it is a bit more future proof if I move and end up with a bigger HT room than my current 12x12 family room.
It should arrive just after Labor Day

Congrats! I'm sure that it'll be exciting to get it all set up and feel the rumble. Please let us know your impressions of it once you've had a chance to enjoy it.
