Help on Subwoofer Decision

I currently have an ascend setup consisting of a set of CBM-170 as fronts, a CMT-140 center, and a set HTM-200 rears. All connected to my JVC RX-888v reciever in a 1700 cubic foot room. Was looking at wrapping up the system with a subwoofer. Currently I am looking at:

1)DAYTON TITSK-15K 15" TITANIC MKIII SUBWOOFER KIT
2)Outlaw Audio LFM-1
3)Rocket UFW-12
4)SVS 16-46 PCi
5)Velodyne ?

I am looking to spend less than $700 shipped. Your info on these or a better sub would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

How about an HSU VTF2. I think Ascend sells these. I really like my VTF3.

The SVS 16-46 goes extremely low, and gives up a bit in the mid bass section. Why not consider the PB12-NSD or NSD/V instead? If not those, then I'd highly recommend the HSU VTF-3 MKII for $629 (on sale this weekend). I really like the Dayton, but being sealed, will give up that awesome sub 20Hz bass you'll get from HSU/SVS.

The VTF-2 is a good sub, but I wouldn't put it anywhere near the league of a 16-46. That VTF-3 is looking pretty attractive with the Father's day sale if you ask me...should be within your budget shipped.

I didn't know about the sale. That's alot of sub for less than $650.

Alright I got it narrowed down a bit and updated with shipping costs.

1) SVS 16-46 PCi $649 + $46 shipping
2) Dayton TITSK-15K 15" TITANIC MKIII SUBWOOFER KIT $688 shipped
3) Hsu VTF-3 MK2 $629 + $53 shipping

Will be buying it this weekend, so any further help on a decision would be great. I am not very knowledgable with subwoofers and I am leaning towards the Dayton simply because the high numbers are attractive to me. Would the other two really be able to compete with a 1000 watt 15 inch driver?

If I were you I would go with either a SVS 20-39 PCi (Not 16-49 because of the reasons stated by Buck) or the HSU you have listed. Buying a subwoofer is not about the "numbers." A subwoofer with high "numbers" such as a 15" driver and 1000 watts of power can easily be beaten (Depending on what your criteria is) by smaller "numbers" buy being a better designed sub. The Dayton is a sealed design. A sealed design in general (Does not include the Velo DD series) rolls of in Freq. Response much higher and requires more power that a ported design. If you are mostly listening to music this is not an issue since most material resides above 40 Hz. But for HT there is a lot of material below 40 Hz even below 20Hz. This is where the ported design excel (depending on the design). Both HSU and SVS make great subs. You can't go wrong with either. I personally own a SVS 20-39 PC+. I love it. If I had to choose for you since the HSU's are on sale for Father's Day I probaby go with the VTF 3. But I would definitely pick either the SVS or the HSU over the Dayton.

Yeah, 1000w sounds like a lot, but I've seen small sealed 12 subs run as much as 1500w. The numbers don't tell you the whole story.

I agree about the 20-39 vs the 16-46, as it is the best trade off between extension and ouput in the lineup.

I run a 15" vented sub and the PCi line won't keep up with it. The 20-39+ I heard has some very impressive output and comes really close.

I have no doubt that the Dayton is a good sub, but I'd also choose either the SVS or HSU in this case.
