Greetings everyone,

I am planning to buy my first home theater set and I am totally new to this equipment. I’ve been lurking in this forum for several weeks to find the best first home theater system within my budget. As for now, I just want to buy a set of speaker and a receiver (no LCD TV or DVD player, I will use my old DVD player connected to a CRT TV ...cough..cough…:D, will upgrade later, hopefully soon..:D).

This is my situation:
My budget is approximately $1500
Room size is16x22x10 ft, mostly carpeted room
I am pretty much listening to all kind of music, from classical to death metal (except rap and hip hop…..no offense here)
I am not really a movie fan, but my wife is, so there is a need to have a good surround sound for her movies. And because this speaker set will be placed in the living room, it is important for her for speaker's aesthetics.

These are what I’m thinking to buy:
Denon AV2308CI (great deal until 6/9 in 6ave.com)
EMP50T 7.1 system (insane deal through this site)

I would appreciate any comments and suggestion to my choice as a beginner.

Thanks a lot.

Denon is a great choice for receiver but it seems like it's too much money for the EMP speakers. Unless you are really buying it for all the other options. Might be a better option if you went lower on your receiver and get a better set of speakers. I can't judge the EMP as I haven't done any research on them. But your budget ratio is a little off from receiver to speaker. EMP being sold by Audioholics.com, I wouldn't worried to much about it, considering this forum is own by them and yet they allow us to recommend other competitors on their own website says a lot about their character.

With that said, it is always good to have other options as well. With your budget, you can also look into the BIC America, Elemental Design, and AV123 x-series. It seems like AV123 is also announcing a big sale on the Rockets as well sometimes today....might want to swing by and see.

The are other sites that have the Denon AV2308CI a lot less than $799 as low as $476. I am not sure what price you are looking at but you might want to consider also Yamaha, Onkyo and Marantz.

The EMP50 seems like are pretty good system and you are right they have it priced very nice ;). It is similar to RBH systems which are good. Have you listened to any other speakers systems? The base place to spend your money for good sound is in the speakers. (1) fronts and center ( should mathc for timbre), sub ( you can add later a good SVS or Hsu sub is artound $400 up), surrounds (there are al ot of surrounds depending on how much space; they don't have to match fronts or center. Having said all that is you are going to spend $1000 on speakers it is good to audition them if you can.

Basically my budget for a reciever is approx $500, and there is an authorized Denon etailer that currently offer AV2308CI in that price (6ave.com). I was considering Onkyo SR606 as well, but I guess I was influenced by AV2308CI review in this site:D.

To be honest, I never had a change to audition a speaker, only listened to a mismatch speaker in local Circuit city sound room (It was Boston Acoustics sub, Polk Audio floorstanding center and surround).

Thanks for the input.

I only went 10k over my original budget:D
What the hell did you PLANNED to buy and What did you ACTUALLY END up with? That is ONE big JUMP. LOL. My budget went from $1k to $3K for 5.1 system. Lately, I have been lurking around the Salk HT3 and AV123 LS6. Those two speakers look extremely tempting. Just not sure if I can tell the difference between those two and what I have now.

EMP Deals

If you are interested in EMP check out the E30 package for better performance and a better deal.

If asthetics are a factor, you might also consider their on-wall speakers which are on sale for $99 each. The EMP50's and to some extent the on-walls compromise performance for asthetics.

Another good option is the SVS bookshelf speaker and sub package for $1k.

If you have a couple hundred dollars left, I would recommend some DIY room treatments to tame the brick walls of the basement and a rug or carpet for the floor.
