I have recently purchased an Onkyo 502 receiver and a DirecTV Tivo receiver to exploit the optical digital audio technology. I use the optical digital for my DVD and DirecTV sat rcvr. I was thrilled when I initially tested the system with the DVD, I have not had the pleasue of a digital audio source before. Then I hooked up my DirecTV/ Tivo rcvr and found that while watching some, but not all shows my surround speakers (not the front or center, only the left/right surround) produce a noisey digital effect, the kind you get when all the digital signal is not quite there like when a cell phone starts dropping out or an mp3 is of poor quality. My guess is that while my Onkyo is set to Pro Logic II, the digital audio from the Directv is not sending in that format requiring processing by the Onkyo which is not handleing it very well. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Only a limited number of shows on Directv are broadcast in Dolby Digital. Anything that is DD will show the DD symbal in the menu. All other shows will be broadcast in stereo. When watching these other shows, the best sound you will get from the Onkyo is ProLogic II.

As for the popping sounds, it sounds like you might have a loose connecntion going to the speakers. Check that and see if it fixes the problem. If not, you may have a defective receiver, and I'd get it replaced immediately.

I'm new here so take what I have to say with a grain of salt ;) but you might want to look at your optic cable closely. If it's a cheapie you might want to upgrade or just buy a digital Coax.
