OK, I've read here before that setup is difficult with Denon's, but based on it's capability I bought one anyway. I've tried to set it up but now I'm stuck. Here are my problems:

1. I can't get the on-screen menu to come up. It worked once, but now I hit the button and nothing happens.
2. No matter what I do, only the front two speakers work (it plays 2.0, even the sub won't work). I have 7.1 speakers set up but only the front L and R will play (I've checked this by connecting front outputs to side and rear speakers and they work when configured like that).
3. I have an Oppo DVD and a PS3 connected to the receiver by HDMI cables. Only the Oppo is recognized. I've tried switching the input HDMI cables between the two available HDMI inputs and still only the Oppo works.

I'd appreciate any ideas or suggestions.

You have a unique set of problems here that I don't really have answers to, but I will give it a bump to attract the attention of others.

Couple of thoughts:
Are you hooked to the TV only with HDMI or have you also hooked up a component or composite? It seems weird that you could see it before, but not now.

Have you run the auto setup or configured the speaker configuration in the setup menu? I don't know you history with receivers, but many people don't know that with the newer receivers, you have the tell the receiver what speakers you have. This is something you can do from the front panel display if you don't get the OSD working right away.

My PS3 is still in transit, so I don't know but I'm wondering if you have to enable the PS3 HDMI output in the PS3 menu.

Sorry if some of this seems too simple, but sometimes its best to begin at the beginning.

Dave is right we need more info. So the on screen menu worked and then stopped working using the same connection? Meaning did you switch from component to HDMI or something similar? If you have both component/s video/composite hooked up along with HDMI it may not send the OSD to the HDMI.

It has been to long since I got rid of my 2106 to remember the speaker set up. Did you try any non-HDMI connections or the tuner then turn on PLIIx or all channel stereo?

Audio:

Did you set the audio options on the Oppo to send multi channel digital audio to the receiver through HDMI. In my 981 manual it’s on page 18. That may be the stereo only issue since it sounds like you have the receiver set properly to get the HDMI input. If you don’t have your manual you can download one from the Oppo website or post back here and I will run through it for you.

If you still don’t get sound out of any but the Front L/R outputs play the Denon’s test tones page 59 of the manual to see if you get sound from all the speakers. If not then try going back into speaker setup and make sure all the speakers you have hooked up are set to “large” or “small” and not “none.”

On screen display:

Check around page 51 of your Denon manual for the “Setting the HDMI out Setup. Go into setup on the receiver and make sure you have the “Analog to HDMI Convert” set to on. AFAIR the Denon on screen display is only a 480 analog signal. I think all you will be able to see are the setup menus. I don’t think it can display the volume onscreen while you are outputting a digital signal to the TV.

Don’t feel bad it took me about an afternoon to figure my Denon out, and I’m still not sure I’ve got it right. BTW if you haven’t noticed yet the manual IMHO sucks.

If none of this works then as the others said please post more detailed info.
