As PENG pointed out, the Pre-pro by itself will have the better SNR because it does not contain the amp, which is usually the weakest link.

For an AVR, it is always connected to the amp, so the SNR will be lower. But if we compare the pre-pro + amp as a whole system vs. the AVR, we will see that the AVR may have better overall numbers.

Sony STR-DN1000 $400 AVR = Pre-Pro + Amp Combined:
THD+N was less than 0.010 percent at 1 kilohertz when driving 2.83 volts into an 8-ohm load. Crosstalk at 1 kHz driving 2.83 volts into an 8-ohm load was –92.18 decibels left to right and –86.60 dB right to left. The signal-to-noise ratio with 2.83 volts driving an 8-ohm load from 10 Hz to 24 kHz with “A” weighting was –107.74 dBrA.

Sunfire TGP-5 $3,500 Pre/pro:
THD+N is less than 0.017 percent; Crosstalk was –88.69 dB left to right and –88.49 dB right to left. The signal-to-noise ratio was –123.11 dBrA

Sunfire TGA-5400 $3,900 Amp:
THD+N is less than 0.020 percent; Crosstalk was –76.83 dB left to right and –75.98 dB right to left; The signal-to-noise ratio was –100.49 dBrA;

Sunfire $3,500 pre-pro + $3,900 amp = $7,400 combined:
THD+N is less than 0.020 percent; Crosstalk was –76.83 dB left to right and –75.98 dB right to left; The signal-to-noise ratio was –100.49 dBrA.

Your system is only as strong as it's weakest link. The weakest link is usually the amplifier. So even if the pre-pro has the SNR of -123dB, the overall system SNR is only -100dB in the pre-pro + amp combo.

You can see that this $400 Sony AVR has better measured specs overall than the higher-end Sunfire combo.

But, of course, not all Sony AVRs are that good. I've seen some that are bad too.:D

This was just to give example of why not all high-end pre-pros will measure better than all AVRs.

Raise your hand if you've ever purchased a $350-$400 receiver for a 2.1 setup when on a shoestring budget and then, years later, upgraded your speakers and decided you needed more power but kept the same years-old receiver as the core of your system.

My hand is up. That is just how my secondary system is. I have an older Pioneer surround receiver mated to a pair of Paradigm Atom "satellites" along with their PDR-10 subwoofer. Actually, the Paradigm system replaced a pair of old used AEI Evolution 1 speakers [Cizek Model 1 look alikes]. They didn't look that great, but I kept them going until foam rot on the woofers (along with other problems) made me move on.

Every speaker listed with the exception of the polks are good solid speakers. All you need to do now is to get the best fit in sound that your budget allows. Unless you like the bright sound of Klipsch which some do, I would stay away from them as well.

If you are on a tight budget, I think the BIC H-100 12" subwoofer is a fantastic buy. You can get it for $220 (free shipping) @ sounddistributors.com & use the coupon code (TV15).

$60 will get you a more power amp in the BIC PL-200 for $279 shipped.

Both were designed by HSU Research.

I would put the extra money into the front tower budget and get the KEF Q900 from accessories4less.com.

The Q900 has been considered to be one of the best in the $2K/pr range. It seems to have superb speaker measurements and sound quality.

If you are on a tighter budget, I recommend the Infinity P363 for $200 each. This speaker has been considered to be one of the best in the $1K/pr range.
Yes, definately consider the BIC America Acoustech PL-200, as I recently received mine and am running it with the Denon 3311, just one very nice sub for $279. It will rattle your walls, windows, and ceiling it you want!!

Mine is set around 9 O'Clock for 75db Slow and "C Weighting" w/ SPL Meter.

I think it is the best sub for the money bar none.

And if your on a tight budget consider the Denon AVR-3312CI, otherwise step up to the Denon AVR-4311CI for some very nice Audio/Video, but the 4311 will set you back around $1500.

I would choose Denon over Onkyo based on reliability problems and poor customer service even if Denon is less powerful. If your room isn't very big and the speakers are mid to highly efficient, with a senstivity between 89 and 92db, the Denon should be just fine.

Take a longer look at the Denon AVR-3312CI or even the Denon AVR-3311CI which you can get for just a little less.

Personally, I would go with the 3312 right around $1K here.
