Hi, everyone, I'm really new at this. Been trolling this site for months as I anticipated finishing school and now I have. I just ordered a 37 inch sharp aquos, Denon 4806 receiver and a pair of Infinity Beta 50 floorstanders. I have a HTDVR dishnetwork and Voom set up in 2 wks. The rest for my eventual 7.1 setup have to wait :-( I'm already broke now with this purchase. Ok, my questions:

1) Which DVD player to get, (I mostly watch DVD, and this setup is in a dedicated theater room above the garage but I would also like to listen to music from the player). I was thinking either the denon 3910 to match the receiver or the new pioneer elite 74 which has similar specs, weighs about the same :-0 and cost $400 less on the internet. My concern is if I get the pioneer would still be able to use the ilink or is that denon properitery? Any advice about these 2 players would be greatly appreciated, thanks alot and happy new years everybody.

Specifically for movies, the oppo digital upscalling DVD player is one of the best buys out there at $200. It will also play DVD-A's. For playing 2 channel music, the digital output from any DVD or CD player will work fine. Just let your receiver do the D/A conversion.

If multi channel music is very important to you, then consider one of the high end players you mentioned. If you don't buy a Denon DVD player with D-Link, then I think you will need to use the analog outputs. Also, when using a digital connection to the receiver. The quality of the DVD players D/A (and possible bass management) are irrelevent because they are not used.

?

Just went on the oppo site and looked, it's very impressive and tres reasonable:rolleyes: I can definitely buy this now instead of waiting till next month like I was going to do with the denon 3910.

One more question, if I connect the optical digital audio out to the denon 4806 receiver, then the receiver should get a pure digital signal and do all the audio work making the oppo's audio quality irrelevant, right? like u said?

Here is a link that i think will help you with your DVD selection.

the Oppo is a great unit and gets rave reviews but only has DVI connection for now.

If you want to take full advantage of the video capabilities of your DVD player, I would get an HDMI DVD player. This will also future proof your system, as much as that can be done. The 3806 does HDMI switching.

Here is a site I think will hlep you with your decision. Lots of great information on the technology.

Hope this helps.

P.S. The 3910 is an awesome player and had the proprietary DenonLink. This will be invaluable for bass managment if you decide you want to get into DVD Audio and SACD music.
