HI everyone.
I need to find out what Ohm level my Marantz SR6001 AV Receiver can handle before I buy new speakers, I am right now running 8ohm fronts and 6ohm rears. I would like to go to 4ohm if possable, or do you think 6 ohm?
But I would like to know the ohm handling first. I cannot find it anywhere and Marantz has yet to respond to my many emails.
THanks everyone.

Look on the rear of the receiver- most manufacturers post it next to, or near, the speaker terminals.

Here's a link-

Google is your friend.

According to the photo, you can't use 4 Ohm speakers.

If you can't use 4ohm speakers with a 1k receiver, Marantz might as well throw in the towel.

On a serious note, if you have found a set of speakers that sound right for you, and they just happen to be 4ohm, I see no reason why you can't use them.

Two things could happen.

1) You receiver will run out of gas at higher levels.(clip) The fact is, receivers/amps will clip with 8ohm speakers when driven beyond their limit.

2) Your receiver will go into protection mode while being driven hard.(shut-off momentarily) If this happens, it means the amp was clipping, and there was about to be some damage. It will come back on. If this is allowed to happen continuously, it could ruin the receiver.

What I recommend.

If the speakers you want are 4ohm, utilize the receivers pre-outs for external amplification for those speakers.

The Marantz is capable of driving 4 Ohm loudspeakers..
The real challenge is @ What volume level?
Key points to keep in mind are:

1. Loudspeaker specs for impedance & sensitivity
2. Room size
3. Type of source material, How much dynamics?
4. Average listening level

All of these should be considered..

Just my $0.02... ;)

Why?
Try listening to a few speakers and find what sound you prefer, instead of picking by impedance.
It will come down to how high your listening levels and how hot the SR6001 gets; that combined with the fact that impedance is not a static value, regardless of what the speaker's label says.

a four ohm speaker isn't "better" than an eight (or six) ohm speaker. It merely makes the amp work harder and is a consequence of the compromises arrived at when designing that speaker for a particular sound.

If it were an improvement, you can bet your bippy that the speaker manufacturer would be touting it as a benefit, like watts on an amp or horsepower on cars.

The Marantz SR6001 is definitely capable of handling 4 Ohm speakers. However, that doesn't mean it will handle any 4 ohm speaker in a very large room. What speakers are you looking at? Do you have efficiency ratings? How large is your room?
