I am in the market for a new receiver as i have recently got some new equipment and my older onkyo receiver has no hdmi.

the equipment in my setup is
TV - samsung LN52A650
ATT uverse hd dvr (will be Direct tv once new HD Tivo is out)
Bluray - panasonic bd35
nintendo Wii
speakers - Axiom grandmaster 350
URC MX-900 universal remote

The recievers on my list are;
Onkyo 705 or 805
Yamaha 863 or 663
Pioneer 1018
Denon 2309
Marantz 5003
Harman Kardon 354

Features I would consider important are, Nice OSD/UI, multi room or zone2 ability, enough power & HDMI inputs, I prefer white or blue lights/display, but that is not a deal breaker. I would also lke it to be as future proof as possible with latest technology. Ventilation is not an issue as I have several fans in the cabinet. I would also like it to be compatible with my current equipment especially with my remote as some equipment has been a pain to program.

I have searched the forums as much as possible and have bookmarked the posts that seem most informative however most compare only 2 models leaving people to ask why not "brand x" so I have included several brands. If I omitted vital info let me know.

thanks in advance for you help.

I personally would probably go with either a Pioneer or Yamaha from your list, as I think they usually offer the most for one's money, but it would also depend upon the particular deals I encountered. If the deal was right, Marantz or Denon would be fine, but I think they usually cost more for equivalent performance. The last two surround receivers I have purchased have been Yamaha, and I would not hesitate to buy another one, as they have been good.

I would not buy an Onkyo, because I like to be able to properly decode the old DPL that is on some of my DVDs, and unless they have changed their ways, they won't do this properly. You, however, might not care about that, as most people don't seem to (though most people don't seem to know how these things are encoded, so that could be part of it).

I don't like the looks of Harmon/Kardon, and they have, in the past, been somewhat irregular in their quality control, though they might have that fixed by now. But they tend to cost more than Yamaha and Pioneer, and I like the looks of Pioneer and Yamaha more, so there isn't any reason for me to select a Harmon/Kardon anyway.

I am sure that if the right people look at this thread, they will strongly take exception to some of my opinions. Ultimately, of course, you must decide what matters to you, and make sure that whatever you buy has all of the features that you require.

And don't worry; they will probably be able to dream up something new that everyone will feel the need to get, so it will probably be obsolete before you want it to be.

I've been shopping the same class of receivers. I've eliminated the Yamaha 663 as it only has 2 HDMI ins. From what I've gathered the Denon is fully functional and reliable, but not spectacular in any way. The Marantz looks the best IMHO. The HK seems to have the greatest "upside".

I've pretty much boiled my search down to the Marantz sr5003 and the Pioneer Elite VSX-03TXH with the HK 354 an option if the price is right.

BTW I know next to nothing compared to the rest of the people in this forum.

My choices from that list would be the Marantz SR5003, H/K AVR354, or the Pioneer.

I've used all three of these receivers are different times in my system and they all did a pretty decent job. I like the Marantz the best for sound quality and looks (actually the 6003, but its essentially the same as the 5003), i like the H/K's GUI the best with the transparent overlay and on-screen volume (it also sounded great). The pioneer i just think was very good for the money, but definately not a top pick.

From what you listed i would choose between the H/K and Marantz. Between the two you cant really go wrong.

All are good picks. I'd go with the HK myself. If you do, be sure to upgrade the firmware.
