Help..my music is fading...

Being a newbie in the world of digital sources I am experiencing two problems that may be connected.

Problem 1: I may have experienced this in the past with a CD that a friend burned for me and now it is happening to CDs that I have recently burned on my compter. They FADE fast. All of a sudden they sound like an AM radio broadcast with a lot of static, then zippo, they won't play at all. I am using Windows Media Player to store my music then burn the CDs from my hard drive. In the past I have only used a Pioneer PDR W739 CD player recorder that is in my system rack to burn Audio Only CDs and I have never had any problems. They are just as good as the originals and seem to last forever.

Problem 2: And this may be related. Last night I was listening to my music library on the hard drive and it started skipping like a bad CD. Is Windows Media Player inferior? The computer is brand new and isn't having any other problems.

I hope someone has an idea. I've spent a lot of time loading my hard drive with about 150 hours of music and I don't look forward to repeating the process.

1. back up your harddrive NOW!
2. it could be anything from crappy software to a damaged HD platter
3. are you sure you made good recordings from undamaged Cds? I'm not accusing you of downloading stolen MP3s, but they, oftentimes, suck

You don't have to back up your hard drive, but you can.

It's not very likely its the hard drive that is making your MP3's skip.

If the hard drive was failing, you would see errors when you boot your computer up, and it would not even be able to read the files.

I had this problem too. I reformatted my hard drive with Windows on it, but left my other drive with all of my music, alone.

I reinstalled Windows XP. This time with Service Pack 2.

What I noticed is that Windows Media Player would skip my songs. So I use Winamp, and its fine.

What program are you using to burn your CD's? Windows Media Player?

If you are, I recommend using Nero Burning ROM instead. It is much more reliable then WMP.
