Absolutely. You wouldn't power a set of $1300 speakers with a $199 Best Buy receiver.

You also need to understand spl levels, resistance, and types of tweeters. Soft dome, aluminum/horn, paper, etc... all give off a different type of sound.

The tweeter is probably the most important driver in a speaker (some might argue midrange). I say tweeter because most of todays speaker systems don't contain a dedicated midrange (most are two way designs). They use a 5 or 6 inch mid bass driver. They are crossed over at a point where the tweeter takes on a huge roll. If you listen to rock, you may prefer a Klipsh type horn. If you are a jazz enthusiast, you may favor a silk dome tweeter.

Tweeters are only "bright, or sibilant" when they introduce distortion. Some reach these levels quicker than others. Horn style tweeters are extremely efficient, and yield very high spl levels (94dB or higher at 1 watt/3 feet).

Dude if youre gonna spend 150 on each speaker I highly reccommend the XL-S from Onix/AV123. Infinitys Primus series are decent (it is my current center channel) and not too pricey.

I have listened to every $200 bookshelf I could find at local stores and nothing touches the Onix.

The onix do look nice, and I bet they sound twice as good as they look, but thats a little pricey for me, for bookshelfs, wait, my bookshelfs were 200$ in my previous set, durp...

Ok, so I've narraowed it down, to, prefferably, 4 onix xls, that should do good for starters.

I listen with my mouth open...
Bright- well thats hard to explain without hearing first hand really.
But anything that uses metal within the name drivers, tend to be tinny, shrilly, kinda and octave or 2 over the real note being played, sung etc., they have no boom to their bass no matter how low they can or cannot play. Least thats my definition.
Another way I look at it, is their ability to play music with bass, without a sub hooked up which is the way you should test listen to them. The speaker set only your looking at, not paired with anything else or a sub. Subwoofers IMO are only movie speakers, thats it, not meant for music unless your maybe into rappy pop music. Then most all music doesnt go below 50hz at all, where a sub begins to shin and bright speakers will then show themselves lacking in any boom, low frequency ability.
I was pushed toward Axioms, Athena's, Infinitys and Klispch when I went to up grade very old Advents and Dynaco's I had. Everything I tested emphasized mid-mid to upper frequencies, kinda to me a PA horn type sound. And only those brands in their upper cost tier had any decent bass to them. All though the Klispch all had decent bass, those horn tweeters over powered the other drivers.

Again speaker buying should be only done to your ears, what you like, never opinions being the only things tested. I went on everyones opinion and tested just those listed to me and couldnt find anything that was neutral and had decent bass to them afford ably. Neutral meaning it doesnt define anyone range of frequencies, does just as good from its lowest point to its highest point, couldnt be used without a sub. Today most all speakers sub $500 aren't IMO, made for subwoofer less play.
Then I heard a set someone else was auditioning outside the sound room that did most of what I was looking for. They were no longer being carried by this high end shop because Audiopiles were now shunning this famous maker since they've gone to China to be made. Not that most everything all ready isnt made there and then assembled here stating made in USA etc. I had allready auditioned this makers higher ended speakers and found them bright, but these weren't. So I tried my test CD's, Chicago with there horns and bass, Pink Floyd Dark Side of The Moon and those Polks won me over. Went to flea Bay and got R-30's for front and R-15's for rear and a older CS-250 for a center.

All in all, $325 spent and picked up a used flea bay sub for another $150. I'm very happy with what MY EARS found and learned once more to shun opinions on the net, make your own decision, listen to all speakers out there. I went through the same thing with the TV I got, hey, get a Sony, a Panny and got a TV half that cost of the others, got it calibrated for another $300, still spending over a $1000 less and would put it against those other TV's anyday!!

I'm just very eager to get something new and better, I'm starting to really pick out what I dont like about my 3-ways.

Almost to the point that I just put on my headphones. Now all I need is money.

That, to me, sounds more like a headphone issue than a receiver issue. What headphones are you using?

If you have your tone controls set for how you like the sound when you're listening to speakers, it may make your headphones sound bad since your speakers are crap, try to reset your tone to normal then take a listen.

I use Sony MDR V6's, so there's no saying that they are bad.

And I got the right sound.

Also, I'm thinking about just building the speakers, I'm gonna take a trip up to ************ tommorow, and will probly pick up some nice drivers and some tweeters.

I have built a few speaker boxes, a sub, and two bookshelfs. The bookshelfs turned out like crap, but the sub was a success.

I really dont have the money to buy speakers right now, and I enjoy building them, well, what I've built so far that is.

<y bookshelfs I built, the enclosure was way to big, so they sounded like crap, plus, there was no crossover.

I meant your actual speakers were crap (ie: bookshelfs, floorstanders, whatever you use) not the phones. I meant if your speakers suck, then when you are listening to other speakers/headphones the way your tone controls are set aren't right for them.

OK....In that case, back on topic.... Did you solve the headphone audio quality issue? And, do you know what you are planning on doing for speakers yet?

Well, I'll probly be buying some 6.5" Dayton woofers and some 1-1/8" silk dome tweeters, and just making myself some nice bookshelfs.

Since anything nice just seems to be really exspensive :(

Dont really think I'm ready for some quality audio, dont really have the big bucks to afford anything.

I'll be heading up to parts express tommorow to pick up my drivers, so if anyone feels differently, speak now, or forever hold your peace :p

/edit and yah, I fixed my headphone issue, my EQ was just set for my speakers, so I tuned it for my headphones. I ditched my hand-me downs btw, I was just sick of em.

DON'T do that yet, if your box building skills aren't up to par, you may find that the increase in quality is....well, not there. Don't jump to that solution yet.

I found my Yamaha's in the trash in front of some random guys house, I find great deals in goodwill/thrift store ALL the time. I once bought a MINT old set of celestion monitors for $19.99... here's the stuff they make today http://www.celestion.com

DON'T settle for junkers, you can find great sound, you just have to listen to a bunch of speakers, and look in the right spots

Well, at least you did one part of the equation right!

Well, either way I'm getting about 80$ tommorow, so if they have something I like, I'll probly pick up on it, if not, well, idk, you ppl make this hard!

J/k thanks for your help.

Hmm, goodwill you say? We've got one just down the road, I'll check it out tommorow.

Well, went to bestbuy, circuit city, hhgregg, tj-maxx, mendelsons, and goodwill.

I cam home with nothing, I couldnt really audition anything, cuase half the time, nothing worked there.

Everythings just too espsensive, and school starts tommorow, so that kinda kills my chances to work.

This kinda sucks, anything I like, I cant afford, and I cant really make any money, dont have time for a job.

I'm starting to get discouraged, I just cant find anything thats in my price range at the moment.

Well, headphones it is for like, another year.

Oh, no, I was just hoping to get some "ok" bookshelfs to hold me voer until I can get something good. Though I had to spot a freind on 20$, so that left me with 60$.

Didnt find anything I liked, so I'll just save it up.

Well, with this kind of thinking you'll never have anything "good"

Now that's a little more like it. THAT'S the kind of thinking that WILL get you "good" speakers. ;)

In the mean time, go listen to as many different speakers as you can so you know what's out there and what you like (and don't like).
