Help me with my ~$1000 5.0 system...

Well, for Christmas, I decided to treat myself to a new audio system. I wanted it to be a functional 2.0/5.0 hybrid and I think the end result looks pretty good. Keep in mind this is ~$1000, so don't get too crazy. I'm hoping some of you may have some alternative suggestions for certain items at around the same price point. Check it out:

Speakers: Fluance XLHTB (2 x XL7F, 2 x XL7S, 1 x XL7C) $649.99 ($150 off)
Receiver: Denon AVR-1613 (HDMI Audio, networked 24/96 audio, Audyssey MultiEQ) $260
Amp: Dayton Audio APA150 (Speakers are bi-ampable and dip into 4 ohms below 200Hz. I figured using the receiver sub-out with a 200Hz crossover sent to this amp would solve potential issues) $128
Wires: Monoprice 12AWG ~$15
Banana Plugs: 14x2 Monoprice ~$20
Subwoofer Cable: Monoprice + L/R Split for Amp $6
Noise Filtering Surge Protector: APC P8V $40

Overall my total w/shipping is about $1119. How does it look? What can be swapped to make it better at the same price point? Do my methods seem sound?

I would toss out the fluance and go for cbm170se front 3 with some decent stands and dayton b652 surrounds will put you around $600 and you wont need the apa since that denon will push cbm's no issues, use the couple hundred you have left to get a sub like the 12" 400w BIC....

If you have a Fry's near you, check out the Infinity Primus p153, that is going on sale tomorrow only for $88 a pair, which is a killer deal. Add a Outlaw Audio LFM-1 Plus, which is on sale till the 30th for $500 shipped. Get the Denon 1613 and the matching Infinity center speaker. That system will stomp on the Fluance system, thanks mainly to the superior subwoofer and killer center speaker. If you want, you can upgrade the front stage later to the Primus p363, which will be a big step up, and then use the p153s as surround speakers. Alternatively you could get the p363, the c351 center, and p153 bookshelf speakers now and get a subwoofer later. Personally I would rather have the sub first.

Also your idea about the dayton crossover is definitely not a worthwhile idea on your budget. The Denon receiver will probably handle the speakers fine unless you really like to crank it.

After reading up on the Ascends, I'm quite intrigued and back to square one. A lot of the input I read came from you in other posts so, if you don't mind, maybe you could answer a few questions for me.

1. Would a jump to a 2.1 CMT 340SE/Sierra setup be a justifiable improvement over the 170's?

2. In a medium sized room would the 340's/Sierra maintain an advantage over the 170's?

3. Would I need their stands for maximum performance, or are there cheaper alternatives that do the job just as well (such as isolation pads)?

4. It looks like they dip into 4-ohms around 300Hz. Are you sure the Denon would run them sufficiently?

5. I've seen the BIC 12" mentioned a lot around here. Is it really the best bang for the buck?

Thanks!

For the price the bic 12 gives a really good value, I like the sound compared to others.... you get a lot for your money...

as for the 170s I like a flat, warm, realistic sound and the ascend se line does this very well.... Actually IMO better than almost all of the speakers I have heard... As far as 340s vs 170s I use the 340s for my surround sound, but the only real advantage I find is the center, I have used 170 fronts with a 340 center and it sounds really good, infact just as good as 340s untill you switch to music.... then the 340s have a noticable edge.... but they cost a good deal more... As far as the Sierra line goes, I prefer the 340s over them for less money...

The 340s, 170s, and 200s, are very easy to run, they are pretty efficient {the sierras are not as much} and the denon will have no trouble...
IMHO, if you watch movies, tv, and play video games more than 70% vs music, in a medium sized room the 170 front sound stage will serve you well, Keep in mind with your denon you are going to cross them at 80hz so the lows wont be eating up your power, the denon will easily power them through the mids and highs, and since you are not reproducing lows you dont need noisy huge floor standing cabinets and the tight bookshelfs will give you great sound...

I went with the 340s because I have a large room, but honestly I have had the 170s up front with the 340 center and you cant really tell the difference until you get up there in volume levels or play 2 ch music...

If you can stretch the budget go 170 and 340 center with the denon, you wont be sorry, and as for the innexpensive dayton bookshelfs for surrounds, they are a great choice to free up budget where it matters, they sound awesome and surround speakers are just for effects, mostly footsteps in the distance, or a car door shutting behind the action, they dont use a lot of power and they hardley ever play on their own...

PS -you can put them on any stands you want....

I think the ascend lline is one of the best values in home theater, they dont have the pretiest enclosures but use top quality components and have a good deal of research behind them, search other forums, you wont find anyone saying a bad word about them.... And I would definitely go 5.1 vs 5.0, that is a given, I have heard very few speakers that can stand alone with out a sub for movies and none of which are in your price range or would I power them with an AVR...

Thanks, that was really informative. As of right now I'm leaning towards a 2.1 340 setup (upgrading to 5.1 as the money comes in), but that could be overkill for my 70/30 movie music split. You said the difference is only really noticeable in music...so it's a tough call.

The BIC F12 seems great for the price, but would a jump to an M8 or STF-1/2 be worth the extra $150 or so?

The 340s are very nice speakers, I have them in my theater which I hardly ever use for music, since I have a dedicated 2.2 system 50 feet away in my front formal parlor. upgrading as you go is the best way to end up with a really nice system... Keep in mind, that a lot of movies are full of music, I watched a knights tale last weekend and it reminded me of what my HT was really capable of {there are some awesome songs in that movie}....

If you can afford them and really want something nice go with the 340's, you wont be sorry, if you are anywhere near me you are welcome to come and take a listen...

Well I'm sold. I'd rather make this a long term project over a 1-time quick settlement. I noticed the 170s are on sale. Does Ascend regularly run sales on their speakers? Would it be worth waiting a month or two just to monitor the price? Also, being mini-towers, the 340s look rather large. Do you think those stands you showed me (or any stand for that matter) will support them well? Thanks, you've been a lot of help.

I bought the 340 stands that match them, they were like $140 shipped {makes them look like towers and when you fill them with sand they have no huge tower enclosure noise... they are mini towers so you want a low stand or a stand you can adjust the height of....

I have seen them on the vantage stands and they look really good Amazon.com: Vantage Point SSB-30BB Adjustable Bookshelf Series Speaker Stands: Electronics

as far as sales go, they do not go on sale often at all... xmass is the only one I have seen.... But if you are going with 340s you wont really need 170s...

I'd take a long, hard look at EMP also

Too bad you missed the Black Friday sale, but I'd bet they'll have a "new years sale" or something like that.
