Help me pick a sub...

I have been reading all the reviews and was strongly considering the svs pb10. I was also looking at the infinity ps12. I can get the pb12 for about 385 at circuitcity. I was just wondering do I pay the extra 435 plus shipping for the svs or budget it and just get the infinity. My room is about 17 by 18. It is also a condo so not sure about how powerful it needs to be. What would you guys do? If it is worth the extra money i will just wait, but if I will be fine with the infiity I would rather get that. Any help or advice would be great. thanks

Something to consider. NHT made the first powered sub for home use. I am using a NHT SW-12. It's killer. The SW-10 rocks as well. You will see it used in many reviews in which another sub is compared, just like a sport sedan is compared to a BMW 3. There is a reason for that. It's called benchmark.

Some people may come in and say, that thing only goes down to 31Hz. So, before they do, let me point something out. The 10" sub they made in '92 went down to 27Hz. There is a reason these subs are tuned a certain way. It's called sound quality.

Why would you want a stranger to tell you which one sounds better?
Do you think they have both brands there to check before they answer?

Go out to some high-end shops and listen to some subs. You may find one that pleases the ear, and the wallet.

I am sure that either HSU or SVS will satisfy. It looks as though HSU is the value leader, while SVS may be a step-up.

I have gone to many high end shops and have not come across the SVS or HSU... if I knew where I could find them to listen to in person... I would have done it already. Do high end stores even carry these brands... I thought you could only order them direct from the manufacturer.

If that's the case then I kind of have to go by people's opinions... meaning people who already own them and are able to give comments or suggestions based on their experience. I can't seem to find any "authorized" dealers... can you come to my house with a demo? HAHA.

I've been to the SVS factory in Girard, Ohio and listened to all their subs. They are huge, go very low, and are geared towards HT IMO. They do not sell sealed enclosures - although many owners love them for music. They do not cater to "budget minded" customers - unless you consider $500 for a sub a "budget" sub.

The HSU VTF-3 I demo'd in Canada a few weeks back resembles the SVS PB12 ISD/V. It's a large sub, and goes very low. I didn't get a chance to demo the smaller HSU subs, as this was all that was available at the store. The VTF-3 is a nicer looking unit, IMO, and may be more room friendly next to a couch. I'm not a huge fan of "textured black," but if it's hidden - who cares?

There's a site somewhere that shows owners of SVS subs across the US. It's there for people who want to demo them in someone's home. The issue is you're limited to the one sub that individual owns.

I know you're looking at the XSUB. It's a nice interim sub that you can always sell on Ebay down the road, and upgrade to an HSU or SVS. After listening to what SVS had to offer, I was sold on the PB12 Plus/2. I couldn't justify spending the cash on an upgrade from my XSUB to a PB10 or 12 ISD. The proper jump would have to be the Plus/2. The issue is - it's too freakin big for my room.

How about a trip to Girard, Ohio to actually see what SVS offers? It was a worthwhile trip, and really opens your eyes to how much better subs can be if you have the cash.

Cool, thanks for your comments guys... My profile has been updated, I'm in the San Fran Bay Area in Cali and would love to hear a demo of an SVS sub. Yeah, I'll probably end up going the budget route as that XSUB is calling my wallet's name... and then upgrade to an SVS later!

I agree with Buck. The XSub is a nice intermediate step. Not the most musical sub, but pretty darn good. Great for HT. The H100 is another great sub in this price range, as well. However, the PB10, at least to me, is justifiable as a next step upgrade. I had 2 XSubs stacked. I got the full 6db output increase. It was very nice. A single PB10 still was cleaner, had more output and extention. In a small to medium size room < 2200^3, it's a monster sub.
