help me find the weak link

right now i have a real cheap 5.1 system and i am having trouble with it. any grenade, bomb, lightning,wind, etc gives a sounds like a old tv with no signal(snow channel).

my equiptment is yamaha rxv465, klipsch quintet, ps3,360, and panasonic 50x1. ps3 and 360 go in yamaha rxv465 hdmi. rxv465 goes out to panasonic hdmi

the other day i went to soundbible.com and downloaded different explosion sounds and burned them onto a cd. i played the cd on the 360 and ps3 and it sounded distorted on both. i can hear the distortion at all volumes. if i play the sounds on the tv speakers it sounds ok(receiver in pass through mode). i noticed this right when i got my system. i thought the speakers were blown so i got a replacement but they sound the same. could the receiver be defective or do these speakers just suck

Do you have subwoofer at all? The problem with any explosions your tiny speakers try to play and fail miserably - TV speakers system is small enough not to even attempt such madness - eg - probably high-pass filter at about 200Hz... or even higher...

To cheaply fix the situation you need to subwoofer - at least a cheap one like Dayton Sub-120.

For now change you yammi avr setting speakers size to small and sub x-over to 120-150Hz...

Actually they will hold their own remarkably well in a medium sized room as long as they have the backing of enough subwoofer.

I suspect that you hit the nail on the head. The OP needs to add a subwoofer to take over everything below 120 or 150hz. 120 for the 4 satellites and 125 or above for the center if memory serves.

sorry i forgot to add that i do have a subwoofer, its a jbl e250p. 13 out of 20 of the explosions i tested made no sound from the subwoofer even with the gain maxed out(just for the test),it almost seems like the sound is comming from the tweeters but its hard to tell because the tweeter and woofer are so close together .right now i have the speakers set to small, crossover at120hz,bass subwoofer out, on subwoofer lfe is selected. the sound doesnt change at all when i set the bass out to speakers/both, speakers large, and the crossover bumped up.

Then I suspect that either the receiver isn't configured correctly. You are running the speakers directly from the receiver and the sub from the sub-out on the receiver right?

+1 or it could be mis-wiring issue

the speakers are hooked up directly to the receiver. as far as the wiring goes there has to be something wrong. when i run the ypao i get the phase warning. black to black, red to red i get the warning, black to red, red to black i get the warning. i dont hear any differences when i switch the black/red.
