So the time has come. This weekend I plan to buy something with my limited budget. I will mostly watch movies and play video games.

http://www.onecall.com/ProductSearch.aspx?sHist=12-110,6-30&menu=true

teatro
2 7.5 floorstanding $99 each
5 6.5 surround speakers $112 each
svs pb10 $430

I could get 4 floorstanding 2 as front l/f and 2 as surround l/r

or

http://www.acousticsounddesign.com/core/view_BigProduct.cfm?pid=1061&sc=32

Acoustech
htr 75 floorstanding $279 pair
ht 65 center $163
ht 63 surround $179 each (4)
h100 sub $250

Teatro
PRO'S - cheaper, smaller, suit a smaller basement, good looks, afford 4 towers
CONS - never heard them play, I assume they are better for music.

Acoustech
PRO'S - Better for movies, dual 6.5" woofers in front speakers and surrounds, higher db sensitivity, good looks
CONS - More expensive so no svs sub. Huge surrounds and center channel in a small basement, 7 horn tweeters might kill my ears when playing music or video games, never heard them play.

I want to stay as close to $1000.00 as possible.

If anyone has another suggestion it's welcome. Thanks!

You should see if you can find a Phase Tech dealer near you to hear the Teatros. That might make the decision easier. As far as the sound of the Acoustechs, reports say they sound similar to the lower end of the Klipsch Reference line.

I think the Klipsch Synergy line has more bass, but harsher (more sibilant) treble than the Acoustechs.

Man, that's a nice price on the Phase Techs. If they sound good, that may be the way to go. It's just hard to beat the looks and performance of the Acoustechs for HT. Especially that awesome spl rating. What type of receiver will you have driving these speakers?

I'm waiting for the denon 2807 to come out in march. If not I'll get the yamaha rx-v2600. Haven't really looked at anything else. Thanks dj, that's the kind of response I was hoping for!

Buckeye, harsh treble is is a concern. Man, 7 horn tweeters! I guess I could always adjust the eq.

I would get the Acuostech's, but then get the SVS sub instead of the other one.

Treato's.

Harsh treble is a big turn off for me. Plus you save some money, and get a far better sub.

I really don't find the horn tweeters harsh at all on the Acoustech speakers. I listen to them pretty much all day with movies/music/tv so I've had a lot of experience with them.

IDK,

cheaply made horn tweeters can resonate or perhaps the throw of the horn could be cheap therefore collapse in soundstage. Only horn speakers I have ever liked were the classic JBL speakers and the Yamaha Pro series.

I would definitly go Phase Tech a good stand up company nice price, better sub options.

Ragged,

I hope I didn't mislead everyone - what I meant was the Klipsch Synergy were more harsh then the Acoustechs. I've read enough reviews on the Acoustechs that I'm convinced the treble is perfectly acceptable with music.

I think you're making a big mistake. If I understand your posts correctly, you're looking at spending close to $1,000 on a receiver & $1,200 to $1,400 on speakers. You'll get better sound putting $500 into a receiver and the rest into better speakers. Concentrate on you front 3 & sub.

Actually, that Denon 2807 is a pretty nice receiver. The HDMI being able to pass 1080p signals is pretty slick.

I'd rather have a solid receiver, I can upgrade the speakers piece by piece later on.
My error Buckyeye, I know you meant the acoustechs treble is good, I just didn't write that.

Thanks for your input guys!

I have to agree with Corey. The receiver has very little to do with the sound you hear. It's almost all speakers and room acoustics.

I hear you. I already owned a $500 receiver, wasn't happy with it. Rather get something with full hdmi switching and 1080i/720p upconversion. With the cable box, computer, dvd player, xbox 360 and PS3 later on this year, that's 5 hdmi/dvi inputs, TV can't handle all that by itself. Might have to get a separate switcher.

As far as going to a dealer to listen to the teatro's. They are an older model, so no dealer near me has any in stock. One place I called never even heard of them, even though they were listed as a dealer on the Phasetech website. Hahahhaha.

That's a great price on the Phase Tech's. One thing that concerns me is the specs on those Teatro 7.5 speakers. Those floorstanders only weigh 22 pounds each. It weighs about as much as a quality bookshelf speaker. For example, the Phase Tech PC1.1 are 43 lbs./pair, for bookshelves. I don't know what they're making those Teatros out of, but for the price I'm sure it's not carbon fiber and titanium. The Acoustech center channel weighs 26 lbs.

I realize you can't determine how well they'll sound by looking at the weight, but it does raise a red flag in my mind.

I've never heard the Teatro speakers. They might sound great, and be an excellent value. I personally own BIC speakers, and am very happy with them for the price. I'd have to give the nod to the Acoustechs.

If you do go for the Phase Techs, I'd use the bookshelves all around. Seeing how it has another midbass driver, it would be capable of outputting more sound than the floorstander (at least I would think so).

5 to 2 in favor of Acoustech!

Plus it must be fate, as I spoke to my brother-in-law not 5 minutes ago, told him what I was going to buy, he said, wait!! His friend is getting married end of March and will be selling his 7.1 Acoustech system because his new wife disapproves of loud speakers.

Hahahahahha, sucker!!!

Thanks for all the input guys!:D
