Help me decide on subwoofer

Recently my dad acquired a pair of Boston VR1 Floor standing speakers for a really good price and he was looking into adding a sub. I work for a pretty popular audio/video store and I can him a pretty nice REL 8" sub for a VERY good price, normally $750 but I can get it for almost $200 brand new! It's a REL Q108-E.

Do you guys think that this would be overkill to match with the VR1s? What would you guys recommend? I heard HSU and SVS sub were good too; note I wanted to help guide him a good direction for a small sub that was VERY tight and not so boomy, like some Martin Loangs I heard. The little REL hits very tight but if you think HSU or SVS is the way to go, any advice would be appreciated!

If you like the REL and you can get it for $200, man, how can you go wrong. They make a very nice sub. More musical to me than HSU and SVS in this price-range. If you were gonna spend up to $750, then it would be a different story. Hey, if you do get a HSU or SVS instead, buy the $200 Rel for me!!;)

What other deals can you get on subs at your place? 8" in my opinion leaves a lot on the table. Even for music, I like a 10" but prefer a 12" since I watch a lot of movies. If that's the only deal you can get, go for it. If you don't like it, I'm sure you'll make a few bucks on ebay selling it.

Your Dads room size can make a big difference. If he is going to be using it in a small room, the 8" sub may be more than enough. IMO, a big sub can be sometimes overpowering in a small room, especially for music. Likewise, If he is going to be using it in a large room, it may not be enough for him, he might want to move up to a 12" sub. If they will let you return the smaller sub after a few weeks if you don't like it, then I say try it out and see how he likes it. If it's not enough, then you can upgrade.

This may be off the subject a bit, but are there any companies who make 15" subs anymore?

Only a handful anymore. PE probably carries the biggest selection. The DIY market is big on 15" sonotubes, sealed enclosures, and infinite baffle systems. I think cost as well as demand probably shys manufacturers away from these big guys. A good 15" driver can get expensive, and so can the amp/cabinet due to it's massive size.

Jamo Makes two THX Ultra (D6 - $1599 MSRP) and THX Ultra2 (D7 - $1999 MSRP) certified 15" subs. I have installed several of each. They're pretty nice.
