Hey guys -

First time poster looking for some sage-like advice from you more experienced audiophiles. I'll try not to be too much of a newb.

OK, I'm about 3 weeks away from moving into a new house and I need to get some ideas on some home theater speakers. My current setup is an Onkyo TX-SR605 receiver and all of my speakers are in-wall Infinity EVS (?) models (very small room in my basement so I needed to go with space saving and they sounded ok). My sub is a cheap DCM 10" with like 100W of power.

Obviously I can't take my speakers with me (which is probably a good thing) so now I am looking for options for fronts, surrounds, backs and a sub. As mentioned, I am moving into a much bigger house so a few constraints on recommendations:

1. No in-wall models. No going to cut into my walls in this place. Did it in the basement because I finished it myself as running wire is easier in new construction then existing. Also, I don't know that I have ever seen anyone say a pair of in-walls was better than any floor standing speakers you can get.
2. Budget minded. I'd like to stay in the $1500-$2000 range for all the speakers.
3. Keeping the receiver. Good or bad (you guys can pass judgment on that) I got a good deal on it and it seems to meet my needs plus the wife would kick my nads in if I tried to swing another one with this one not even being a year old yet.

The specifics -

The room structure is fairly wide open. 9 foot ceilings and the kitchen, dining area and family room all run together in a big open room. Carpet on the floor in the family room where this will be housed. Room size is roughly 18 x 18, but again is wide open on one side to the dining area and kitchen.

Think that's about it. Appreciate any feedback/advice you folks could give me in regards to some speaker options. Please let me know if you need any additional information. Thank you.

I think it really depends on what you're going to use it for... mostly music/entertaining, movies, or console gaming?

Also I take it you are ok with floor standing fronts and smaller speakers in the rear?

the onkyo 605 cant really drive floorstanders so your best bet will be bookshelf speakers. At that price I;d have to say go with the def tech pro cinema 1000 it'll be around $1500 msrp.

Mostly for watching movies/TV...not a whole lost for music listening. Yeah, I am ok with floor standing speakers but sounds like my receiver may not have the juice to push them based on rded's comments.

My thought is, as long as the speakers are efficient (sensitivity of > 90 dB w/m), it doesn't matter if it is towers or monitors. Remember, the lower bass requires the most power, so if your towers are like 50 hz - 20 kHz +/- 3dB @ 90 dB w/m, I think it will be okay. Onkyo receivers are known to have good power output. In other words, if they say it's 80 watts, then it's 80 watts, not 30 watts per channel like some companies. If you set your speaker setting to SMALL, all the bass will go to your powered subwoofer anyway.

The main concern is the budget. Towers are usually more expensive. But monitors (boodshelf speakers) will need stands, which can cost a few.
