HELP! HDMI HDTV Connection Problem

I'm running Yamaha RX-V2600 receiver. It is connected to Panasonic AE900 front projector using the HDMI out from the receiver.

Panasonic DVD player is connected to HDMI 1 input on receiver. It worked perfectly out of the box.

I just connected a digital/HD box from my cable company using teh HDMI out on the cable box to the HDMI 2 input on the receiver. A strange thing happens. The audio is always there. But, when that input is selected on the receiver, the video is appears only for 2 or 3 seconds. Then, the image begins to flash, then the screen changes to all green and begins flashing green and does that continuously. I connected the cable box using standard analog RCA type connectors to a different input, and it worked fine, but with a not very good image of course.

I called the cable company to see if they had any ideas. Their only comment was that I needed to have a component connection together withe the HDMI connection, which did not make sense to me.

This is WAG, but it sounds like a sync problem. Turn everything off. Start the projector and have the receiver set to the cable box input......then turn on the cable box last (after your screen shows that it's on the correct input). Is there a DVI connection on the cable box as well? If so, I'd try that second. HDMI seems to not be ready for prime time with some stuff.

Cable Box

Several people have had issues with HDMI from the cable box to the receiver. I think that most of the problems have to do with the HDCP copy protection that is built into HDMI. Some cable box manufacturers may have a firmware update to fix the problem.

A good work arround is a component video connection from the cable box. You will also need a coax or optical connection to get digital audio from the cable box to the receiver. With this connection method, you will also be able to take advantage of the upscalling feature of your receiver on SD cable programs. If you use the HDMI cable, the receiver cannot upscale the video.
