Help for beginner to turntables?

Hi all,

I have no prior experience with turntables. I would like a cheap turntable with a built in preamp. The only store in my area that still carries turntable equipment is The Source. There are 2 record players I was considering: the TEAC GF180 and the Nexxtech Lab 1100. They can both be seen here:

I am reletively unconcerned with audio quality, just that it doesn't sound like a distorted mess to the average (not audiophile) listener, and that it doesn't damage records. Which of the two would you reccomend?

Darkcanuck,
If you are really not interested in high quality, see what local flea markets, pawn shops, and garage sales may have lurking around. You can sometimes find some good stuff. If you are looking for something a bit more high quality, I haven't seen too many places that actually still sell turntables, but I saw one by Marantz a while back...

It's probably WAY more expensive than what you were planning on, but I bet it's really nice. :D I see that Denon still has a few:

The DP-29F runs about $150. About the same as that Nexxtech you were looking at. I am not sure if it has the built in pre-amp or not but it says it has a phono equalizer. Not sure what that even is.

The Teac site only had one that I could find:

http://www.teac.com/consumer_electronics/P_A688.html

It had some others under the nostalgia and classic sections, but they were integrated with cassette and cd players, not standalone turntables.

Are you looking to attach it to a receiver, or to try and record the sound from it to something, or do you simply want it for listening to something? I have an old turntable with quadrophonic sound up in my parents attic...
