Help complementing Energy speakers

Good Day Everyone,

Been a long time lurker, now have some time to mess with my small theater setup. Here is what I currently have:

Onkyo TX-SR806 Receiver
1 x Energy RC-LCR
4 x Energy RC-10
1 x Elemental Designs A2-300 Sub

I am looking to setup a 7.1 system, and I have a budget max of $800. Originally I wanted to setup 2 RC-10's in the front, 2 RC-10's in the rear, and buy something for the sides.

Now, I figure that either I can get new fronts, new sides, or new rears, but I am unsure and would love to get some opinions on this matter. All suggestions are welcome and thank you for your time.

3 options that come to mind...factoring in available deals...

1. black RC-30's (from Audio Advisor) up front, then RC-10 as sides/rears.

2. RC-R for sides, with RC-10 as fronts/rears.

3. As an inexpensive option - rosenut RC-Mini CC (from Vann's) as sides or rears, and the 2nd pair of RC-10 for the other


Given your budget, I'd think option 1 makes the most sense, unless you are completely satisfied with the RC-10 as fronts and don't want towers.

Of course, if you looking into non-matching speakers you have alot of other options....but given you already have a matching 5.1, I'd probably stick with the RC series.

I'd stick with what you have up front and maybe look into some Axiom Q'4's for the rear surround. Imo they work great with my 30's and their quad design definitely make things come alive and very easy to install.

Edit: I didn't know AA still has Energy stock. The RCR's where my first chioce but couldn't get them anywhere around here, but they also cost more...fwiw

Vann's also has RC-R available, although listed at full retail online. If you call you might be able to get a better price.

Thanks for all of your replies. I have been looking at various retailers and it actually seems that the RC-R, RC-10, and RC-30's are all in the neighborhood of $350 or so.

From what I have read, those RC-R's are pretty sweet for surround, but wouldnt the RC-10 be just as effective? If they are all the same price, would it be better to get those RC-30s for the fronts and rc10s for everywhere else?

I just find it strange that they would all be the same price. Would the RC-30s be better overall? Sorry, just confused and looking for a smart purchase.

Also, all the speakers I have are Cherry in color. Again, thank you all for your opinions! I look forward to some more input.

When I switched to the Q4's they widened the sound field particulary when playing movies. Being a quad polar design they radiate the sound all around unlike a monitor which is more direct in nature. Which way you go depends on you but having used a monitor for surround duty prior ...I much prefer the Q's. Now for those who are far more discerning when listening to music they'd likely prefer a monitor...different strokes for different folks...
